Harvested Over 2650 SunGold Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 8 Black Cherry(1), 7 Indigo Rose, 5 Husky Cherry Red(1), 4 Black Cherry(2), 4 Snow White(1), 4 Snow White(2), 4 Red Currant, 3 Red Boar(1), 3 SunGold, 3 Italian Heirloom, 2 Oaxacan Jewel, 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Thessaloniki, 2 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Pierce's Pride(1), Big Bite, Yellow Perfection, Amana Orange, Oaxacan Pink, Carmello, Marmara and Speckled Roman(3) for a total of 65 tomatoes.

No harvest on Wednesday. I had trouble getting to sleep on Tuesday night.

On Tuesday my wife pulled Black and Brown Boar(1) and Dr. Wyche's Yellow. Yesterday she pulled Crimson Cushion, Taxi, Tolstoi and SunSugar. Pulling SunSugar was a surprise because it still had some life but she indicated that she wanted the terra cotta pots for growing lettuce. She's the one keepting the plants alive with her watering so if she wants to pull it that's good enough for me.

Also, several plants were trimmed. And the back yard tomatoes were partially watered.

We've now harvested over 2650 SunGold tomatoes (2652)! Also, we've harvested over 50 Noire Charbonneuse(2) tomatoes (51).

Harvested Over 150 Indigo Rose Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 7 Thessaloniki, 6 Indigo Rose, 6 Yellow Perfection, 5 Black Cherry(1), 4 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 SunGold, 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Snow White(1), Porkchop(1), Black and Brown Boar(1), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Red Currant, Big Bite, Carmello, Japanese Black Trifele, Amana Orange, Marmara and Red Boar(2) for a total of 44 tomatoes.

It got up to 98.0 yesterday, still pretty hot.

We ended up harvesting 3240 tomatoes for the month of August. That's a very, very solid total considering how hot it was all month.

We've now harvested over 150 Indigo Rose tomatoes for the year (152)! Also, we ended up harvesting 200 Snow White(1) tomatoes and 50 Carmello tomatoes for the month of August.

More plants can be pulled when my wife can get around to pulling them. The August heat was murder on these plants...

Harvested 150 Black Cherry(1) Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 11 SunGold, 6 Indigo Rose, 4 Yellow Perfection, 3 Black Cherry(1), 2 Oaxacan Jewel (6.5 ounces), 2 Carmello, 2 Thessaloniki, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Snow White(2), Chinese Tea, Porkchop(1), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Big Bite, Pink Furry Boar, Crimson Cushion, Husky Cherry Red(1), German Orange Strawberry, Japanese Black Trifele, Black Cherry(2), Gypsy and Red Boar(1) for a total of 49 tomatoes.

Back when we were harvesting 162 tomatoes a day I mentioned we might only be harvesting about 30 by the end of the month. We're getting there...

The weather is warming up again...

We almost hit some major milestones today. Tomorrow we'll hit at least three milestones.

We've now harvested 150 Black Cherry(2) tomatoes and 50 Japanese Black Trifele tomatoes this year.

Today's harvest includes 34 Black Cherry(1), 18 SunGold, 15 Husky Cherry Red(2), 14 Snow White(2), 8 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Snow White(1), 4 Carmello, 4 Red Boar(1), 4 Indigo Apple(2), 4 Yellow Furry Boar, 3 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 3 Redfield Beauty, 2 Vorlon, 2 SunSugar, 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Nyagous(1), Speckled Roman(1), Black and Brown Boar(1), Ella's Pink Plum, Pineapple Pig, Brad's Black Heart (7 ounces), Oaxacan Pink (6 ounces), Black and Brown Boar(2), Italian Heirloom, Amazon Chocolate, Black Cherry(2), Earl of Edgecombe, Watermelon (7 ounces), Pineapple(2) (19 ounces) and Indigo Rose for a total of 142 tomatoes.

Yesterday's high: 99.7 degrees. There's something wrong when 100 degrees feels like a relief...

My wife took out Persimmon, Ramapo and Omar's Lebanese. We harvested 16 Persimmon and 7 Omar's Lebanese but both were successful plants. It's not just numbers, but the quality and size of the harvested tomatoes.

My wife also completed the front yard watering and most of the back yard tomatoes as well. There's more to remove but I need to look them over before deciding which ones go. She also made more sauce from our tomatoes.

Last night I tried Yellow Furry Boar again as part of dinner. There was no fur on any of our Yellow Furry Boars this year but it tasted smooth, juicy and quite good. Our August tomatoes still have it...

Today's harvest was definitely heftier than it has been in a while. The Pineapple(2) looks beautiful!

We've now harvested over 9000 tomatoes for the year (9104)! Also, we've harvested over 1500 back yard tomatoes this month (1568).

We've harvested over 600 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (611) and over 50 Indigo Apple(2) tomatoes (57) this year.

And on a personal note, this is my 1000th blog post!

Yesterday's high was 107.8. Need I say more?

I was going to mention that while most of the cherry tomatoes are thinning out, Black Cherry(1) still had a fair amount to tomatoes to mature. As you see but the sudden increase, some of them matured yesterday!

Today's harvested Neves Azorean Red tomatoes look quite nice.

Black Krim(2), Sweet Baby Girl and Creme Brulee were pulled. I told my wife that three more in the front yard could also be pulled.

We've now harvested over 5500 back yard tomatoes this year (5502). Also we've harvested over 2400 SunGold tomatoes (2415), over 500 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (502) and over 250 Snow White(1) tomatoes (251).

There was no harvest on Thursday. Neither of us slept well. It got up to 107.2 on Wednesday and we didn't cool down the bedroom like we should have. My wife is ill and our bedroom was simply too hot for us to sleep well. I woke up before 5 in the morning, sweating. So I took care of a couple errands and went out for breakfast.

And yesterday it got up to 109.4 degrees. Yikes! But we cooled the room this time and the night was a tad cooler than the night before. We both slept well, certainly better than the night before.

But boy is it hot. Some of our plants are becoming bone dry. To be fair the plants will become bone dry anyway, just not so soon.

My wife pulled out Big Zebra yesterday and I believe she watered the pots the day before.

We've now harvested over 2300 SunGold tomatoes (2333), over 200 Snow White(1) tomatoes (213) and over 50 Chinese Tea tomatoes (51)!

Today's harvest includes 28 SunGold, 13 Snow White(2), 8 Snow White(1), 5 Sweet Million, 3 Sweet 100, 3 Chinese Tea, 3 Delicious, 3 Black Cherry(1), 3 Black Cherry(2), 3 SunSugar, 3 Sweet Baby Girl, 3 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 White Zebra, 2 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 2 Big Zebra (8.5 ounces, 11 ounces), Black Krim(1) (8 ounces), Kellogg's Breakfast, Porkchop(1), Indigo Apple(1), Oaxacan Jewel (8 ounces), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Ella's Pink Plum, Creme Brulee, Pineapple Pig (8 ounces), Pink Furry Boar, Crimson Cushion, Italian Heirloom, Amazon Chocolate, Noire Charbonneuse(2), Marmara, Red Boar(1), Ramapo (7 ounces), Jaune Flamme(2) and Porkchop(2) for a total of 111 tomatoes.

My wife watered some of the back yard tomatoes yesterday. Short of that, it got up to 106.7 at Pierce College so there's not much that could have been done without a lot of effort.

It looks like a couple more tomato plants can go (Big Zebra, Nyagous(2)) and others not far behind (Creme Brulee). While doing the harvest I broke a large Husky Cherry Red(2) branch that was laying in the pathway. Darn it..

We hit several 2012 numbers today. We've now harvested over 8000 tomatoes for the year (8038), over 5000 tomatoes from the back yard this year (5033) and over 3000 tomatoes from the front yard (3005)!

We've now harvested over 1000 tomatoes for August (1086). Also, we've now harvested over 100 Snow White(2) tomatoes (107) for the year.

Loteria Grill Was A Blast!

Today's harvest includes 23 SunGold, 7 Black Cherry(1), 6 Yellow Furry Boar, 6 Husky Cherry Red(1), 4 Snow White(1), 4 Indigo Rose, 4 Sweet Million, 3 Snow White(2), 3 Husky Cherry Red(2), 3 Black Cherry(2), 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Sweet 100, 2 Ella's Pink Plum, 2 Red Currant, 2 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 2 Yellow Perfection, 2 SunSugar, 2 Pink Furry Boar, 2 Pineapple Pig (7 ounces), 2 Redfield Beauty, Chinese Tea, Berkeley Tie Dye, White Zebra, Sweet Baby Girl, Black Krim(2), Black From Tula, Creme Brulee, Delicious (6 ounces), Neves Azorean Red (17 ounces), Gypsy, Red Boar(1), Ramapo (8 ounces), Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red and Tolstoi for a total of 97 tomatoes.

The TomatoMania event at the Loteria Grill was a ton of fun! We brought German Orange Strawberry, Pineapple Pig, Indigo Apple, Yellow Furry Boar, Pineapple and Pink Furry Boar for consumption. We met fellow TomatoManiacs again and of course it's fun to reconnect and all. My wife brought tomato jelly for Scott Daigre. He made sure to stash it away. My wife also got an autograph from him for his recent article in Grow magazine.

My wife and I had a blast. Lots of tomatoes and good food. Time went by very quickly.

Last night we tried Aunt Ruby's German Green and it was terrific!

I told my wife that she can pull Chile Verde. Others may be going soon.

A Pineapple(2) tomato is maturing.

We've now harvested over 2200 SunGold tomatoes (2216). And we've harvested over 500 back yard tomatoes this month.

My wife made 8 jars of tomato jelly yesterday. Also, she watered more of the back yard and pulled out Brown Berry. Here's an image of the tomato jelly jars:

The harvested Pineapple(1) tomatoes look really nice!

At dinner we tried Big Zebra. This was the 19 ounce tomato harvested last week. We both liked it a lot! Beautiful to look at, tasty, tangy and delicious, leaving a slight acid aftertaste.

We've now harvested over 4500 tomatoes in the back yard this year (4600). Also, we've now harvested over 400 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (407), 150 Red Currant tomatoes, over 100 Sweet Baby Girl tomatoes (105) and over 50 Black and Brown Boar(2) tomatoes (54).

Harvested Over 6000 Tomatoes In July!

Today's harvest includes 40 SunGold, 19 Black Cherry(1), 17 Husky Cherry Red(2), 10 Snow White(1), 6 Snow White(2), 5 Garden Peach, 5 Husky Cherry Red(1), 4 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 4 Black and Brown Boar(2), 4 Sweet Baby Girl, 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Indigo Rose, 3 Jaune Flamme(2), 3 Earl of Edgecombe (6 ounces, 8 ounces), 3 Black Cherry(2), 2 Green Grape, 2 German Orange Strawberry (8.5 ounces), 2 Speckled Roman(3) (6 ounces), 2 Carmello, 2 Gypsy, 2 Red Boar(1), 2 Indigo Apple(2), Berkeley Tie Dye, Sweet Million, Red Currant, Pineapple(1) (10 ounces), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) (6.5 ounces), Pink Furry Boar, Oaxacan Pink (7.5 ounces), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Big Bite, Pineapple Pig, Japanese Black Trifele (6 ounces), Italian Heirloom (10 ounces), Creme Brulee, Yellow Furry Boar, Purple Dog Creek (9 ounces), Amana Orange (10 ounces), Delicious (9 ounces), Red Boar(2), Amazon Chocolate, Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, Taxi, Porkchop(2) and SunSugar for a total of 172 tomatoes.

We've now harvested over 6000 tomatoes for the month of July (6088)! This is a sign of a tremendous month. If time permits, I'll do a comparison with prior years (I didn't have time at the end of June to go across years). But I can state -- our tomatoes have been quite tasty (truly the only thing that matters), large and plentiful. Everything else is just noise.

Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) and Brown Berry need to be pulled.

Harvested Over 6000 Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 40 SunGold, 33 Black Cherry(1), 28 Husky Cherry Red(1), 16 Husky Cherry Red(2), 8 Black Cherry(2), 8 Snow White(1), 6 Indigo Rose, 6 Black and Brown Boar(2), 6 Yellow Perfection, 6 Snow White(2), 5 Pink Furry Boar, 5 SunSugar, 5 Garden Peach, 5 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 4 Green Grape, 4 Amazon Chocolate (7.5 ounces, 8 ounces), 4 Thessaloniki (7 ounces), 3 Creme Brulee (6 ounces, 6 ounces), 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Black Krim(2), 2 Speckled Roman(2), 2 Brown Berry, 2 Black and Brown Boar(1), 2 Earl of Edgecombe, 2 Marmara (6 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Yellow Furry Boar, 2 Crimson Cushion, Marianna's Peace (16 ounces), Chinese Tea, Watermelon (8 ounces), Black Krim(1) (8 ounces), Nebraska Wedding (9 ounces), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2), Jaune Flamme(1), Indigo Apple(1), Big Zebra, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Japanese Black Trifele, Taxi, Purple Dog Creek (10.5 ounces), Persimmon (11 ounces), Red Boar(2) and Jaune Flamme(2) for a total of 232 tomatoes.

I'm a little surprised that the numbers have stayed as solid for this long. SunGold is finally starting to fade but the two Black Cherry and the two Snow White plants have picked up the slack.

The tomato sizes are starting to dwindle and the plants are looking ragged. Noire Charbonneuse(1), Chinese Tea and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) may not last much longer. However, many plants will have a second wind. Sweet Baby Girl already has a second wind and has maturing tomatoes again.

My wife watered the back yard containers.

We've now harvested over 3000 tomatoes in the back yard for the month of July (3151) and over 6000 tomatoes for the year (6187).

The Italian Tree tomato is a nice looking thing but the trouble is that this may be the only tomato to come off this plant. I don't see any others.

Speaking of which, it's been 3 weeks since we've harvested from Sweet Baby Girl but it's making a comeback.

Again, the Persimmon tomatoes look beautiful.

Finally, the Black Cherry(1) harvest starts to get heavy.

We've now harvested over 3000 tomatoes from the back yard this year (3095).

Harvested Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red!

Today's harvest includes 99 SunGold, 24 Husky Cherry Red(2), 23 Husky Cherry Red(1), 13 Black Cherry(1), 10 Black Cherry(2), 10 Snow White(1), 8 Garden Peach, 5 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 5 Gypsy, 5 SunSugar, 5 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg (7 ounces, 7 ounces), 4 Jaune Flamme(2), 3 Japanese Black Trifele (8 ounces), 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Snow White(2), 3 Matt's Wild Cherry, 3 Speckled Roman(3), 3 Pierce's Pride (8 ounces, 7.5 ounces, 7.5 ounces), 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Red Boar(2), 2 Big Bite (11.5 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Jaune Flamme(1), 2 Green Grape, 2 Yellow Currant, 2 Yellow Furry Boar, 2 Speckled Roman(2), Chinese Tea, Porkchop(1) (8 ounces), Oaxacan Pink (8.5 ounces), Indigo Apple(1), Brad's Black Heart (11 ounces), Amazon Chocolate (12 ounces), Thessaloniki, Nebraska Wedding, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), Berkeley Tie Dye (6 ounces), Marianna's Peace (7.5 ounces), Delicious, Black From Tula (6 ounces), Crimson Cushion, Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek (15 ounces), Italian Heirloom (7.5 ounces), Earl of Edgecombe (8.5 ounces), Red Boar(1) and Marmara for a total of 269 tomatoes.

Yesterday it got up to 101 degrees at Pierce College. That seemed to reflect in today's harvest. There were a lot of tomatoes but it didn't look like it weighed more than yesterday's harvest. A lot of cherry tomatoes in today's harvest. Not that we're complaining...

We brought a lot of tomatoes to the "seed lady" to be distributed throughout their neighborhood. It looks like we'll make a tomato donation to charity soon. It would have happened Friday but time but my wife ran out of time...

A Persimmon branch got so heavy it simply doubled over. This is not the first time such a thing occurred but it is the first time that it felt dangerous to tape it back into position. The tomatoes were so heavy I thought I would break the branch in two. So I took one of my tomato gloves and laid it between the fallen tomatoes and the ground.

An Italian Tree is maturing.

We've now harvested over 1600 SunGold tomatoes (1603) and over 500 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes (501). Also, we've now harvested over 2000 tomatoes in the front yard (2070), over 4000 tomatoes in the month of July (4149) and over 5000 tomatoes for the year (5013)!

Harvested Earl of Edgecombe and Red Boar(2)!

Today's harvest includes 58 SunGold, 24 Husky Cherry Red(2), 14 Husky Cherry Red(1), 11 Yellow Perfection, 10 Garden Peach, 8 Black Cherry(1), 4 Earl of Edgecombe (new) (11 ounces, 7 ounces, 7 ounces, 8 ounces), 4 SunSugar, 3 Jaune Flamme(1), 3 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 3 Snow White(2), 3 Yellow Furry Boar (6 ounces), 3 Snow White(1), 3 Dr. Wyche's Yellow (8 ounces, 6 ounces, 9 ounces), 2 Yellow Currant, 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Delicious (11.5 ounces, 7 ounces), 2 Black and Brown Boar(1), 2 Gypsy, 2 Big Bite (11 ounces, 8 ounces), 2 Thessaloniki, 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Jaune Flamme(2), 2 Black Cherry(2), 2 Italian Heirloom (12 ounces, 10 ounces), 2 Chinese Tea, 2 Ramapo (12 ounces, 17 ounces), 2 Indigo Rose, Red Boar(2) (new), Oaxacan Pink (11 ounces), Speckled Roman(3) (7 ounces), Pink Furry Boar, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg (6 ounces), Oaxacan Jewel, Paul Robeson, Marianna's Peace (8.5 ounces), Carmello, Crimson Cushion, Red Currant, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) (6 ounces), Black and Brown Boar(2), Black Krim(1) (7 ounces), Berkeley Tie Dye (8.5 ounces), Japanese Black Trifele (6 ounces), Nyagous(1), Noire Charbonneuse(1), Marmara, Speckled Roman(1), Matt's Wild Cherry, Amazon Chocolate (11 ounces), Green Grape and Nebraska Wedding (14 ounces) for a total of 203 tomatoes.

Well, Earl of Edgecombe was a complete surprise! All four of them were a vibrant deep orange color. All of them were hidden beneath the canopy of leaves around the plant. On a whim I decided to look inside the canopy and hey, look what I found!

We tried an Earl of Edgecombe for breakfast. It was pretty mushy but the flavor still came through. Unfortunately I picked these four about two days too late. That's not the fault of the tomato, it's my fault for not checking sooner. There's another one that should be ready tomorrow.

I did something I hadn't done in a couple of weeks -- I used tomato tape on a lot of branches, especially in the front yard.

My wife finished watering the back yard.

We've now harvested over 1500 SunGold tomatoes (1504) and over 100 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (103).

Harvested 7 New Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 75 SunGold, 37 Husky Cherry Red(1), 34 Husky Cherry Red(2), 9 Black Cherry(1), 9 Yellow Perfection, 7 Jaune Flamme(1), 7 Garden Peach, 7 Red Currant, 6 Yellow Currant, 6 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg (6 ounces, 10.5 ounces), 5 SunSugar, 4 Noire Charbonneuse(1), 4 Carmello, 4 Green Grape, 4 Black and Brown Boar(1), 4 Speckled Roman(2) (9 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 3 Black Krim(2) (8 ounces, 7 ounces, 16 ounces), 3 Dr. Wyche's Yellow (11.5 ounces, 19.5 ounces, 11.5 ounces), 3 Pink Furry Boar, 3 Black Krim(1) (9.5 ounces), 3 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 2 Porkchop(2) (new) (6 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Purple Dog Creek (new) (14.5 ounces, 11.5 ounces), 2 Red Boar(1) (new) (6 ounces), 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) (9 ounces, 8.5 ounces), 2 Chinese Tea, 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Brad's Black Heart (9.5 ounces, 9 ounces), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) (8 ounces, 7 ounces), 2 Tolstoi, 2 Japanese Black Trifele (9 ounces), 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Black Cherry(2), 2 Crimson Cushion, 2 Watermelon (6 ounces, 10 ounces), 2 Oaxacan Jewel (11.5 ounces, 19.5 ounces), White Zebra (new), Delicious (new) (8 ounces), Porkchop(1) (new) (7.5 ounces), Pineapple(1) (new) (15 ounces), Sweet Million, Jaune Flamme(2), Sweet 100, Pierce's Pride(2) (6.5 ounces), Big Bite (10 ounces), Black From Tula (8 ounces), Indigo Apple(2), Oaxacan Pink (8. 5 ounces), Creme Brulee and Speckled Roman(3) (6 ounces) for a total of 287 tomatoes.

This is what "high tide" looks like. What a harvest!

My wife now has a part time job just processing all the tomatoes. You name it, she's making it. She spent most of the day filling up 6 quart jars of tomatoes.

I showed my wife the harvested Oaxacan Pink and she believes for now there's a difference between the labeled Oaxacan Pink and Oaxacan Jewel. We'll see.

There are so many good looking tomatoes in today's batch I don't even know where to begin.

Maturing tomatoes include Nebraska Wedding and a yellowing tomato I have yet to identify.

We've now harvested over 1000 SunGold tomatoes this year (1004) and over 400 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes (409). Also, we've harvested over 1000 tomatoes from the front yard in July (1021) and over 3000 overall for the year (3186).

Red Boar(2) Has Growing Tomatoes!

Today's harvest: 4 SunGold, 4 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Sweet 100 and Sweet Million for a total of 11 tomatoes.

Yesterday I spent a good amount of time clearing out the "underbrush" from the tomato plants. SunGold in particular had a lot of yellowing lower branches. That's natural. There's a ton of tomatoes on the plant and the focus of the plant is pushing out tomatoes at the cost of supporting the lower branches. Kellogg's Breakfast had a lot of yellowing branches but that's because the plant is struggling.

I just kept cutting the lower and yellowing branches on all the plants. They definitely look better now for what that is worth.

Red Boar(2) has a growing tomato on it. This is another struggling plant that's recovered enough to produce fruit.

May 2012 Tomato Analysis

For the month of May 2012, we harvested 22 tomatoes -- 12 Husky Cherry Red(2), 9 Husky Cherry Red(1) and a Red Currant.

How does this compare to other years? It's in the middle of the pack.

2012 -- 22
2011 -- 0
2010 -- 1
2009 -- 11
2008 -- 60
2007 -- 98

What does this tell us? Not much of anything. 2007 was our best year but 2008 was our worst year -- we had planted too early.

However, we can get some clues by the plants I was having concerns about.

I had issues with leaf curl with Big Zebra. Not now. It's sitting directly under the lemon tree so it gets the least amount of sun. The two heat waves helped to dry the underside of the leaves. The plant lost the slight gray look and appears quite healthy. Recently I discovered a growing tomato on it.

There were issues with Red Boar(2) planted in the redwood raised bed. The main stem seemingly split into two twin stems. These stems got long enough to start splitting open the stem at the fork but not long enough to get supported by the cage. Eventually the cage was able to supply support. The plant still has an main stem issue but looks really healthy. It has a really good color with new blooms.

Italian Heirloom looked quite thin and wispy for a beefsteak plant. It's taken off and the main trunk is thickening.

We had pulled Bloody Butcher and Vorlon(2). We replaced them with Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red and Aunt Ruby's German Green. The two new plants look great. They're a little behind the others only because they were planted later than the others. They're doing just fine.

Pineapple(2), the grafted tomato was planted on May 12. It was looking okay when originally planted. The lower leaves were yellowing and it had a scrawnly look. No longer. It's only about a foot tall but the color is gorgeous and it's reaching for the sky.

Both Snow White plants didn't look too great about three weeks ago. Scrawny and small. However, both have taken off and both have growing tomatoes on them. However, the plant grew sideways until it reached the cage, then grew vertically. Three or four of our plants have a pronounced "elbow" before growing vertically. This appears to be a downside of a wide cage.

The only plant that looks like it's struggling a bit is Kellogg's Breakfast. The plant is actually rather tall at about four feet in the air. But it has only two real branches. It's quite leggy with yellowing leaves at the bottom. I think we'll get a few tomatoes off of this plant but not many.

But...we have one somewhat struggling plant out of 93. That is great! However, last year we had several plants just stop once they got growing tomatoes on them. Assuming that doesn't happen this year, look out. We're going to have a great 2012 harvest.

Five More Plants With Growing Tomatoes!

Today's harvest: 2 Husky Cherry Red(1) and Husky Cherry Red(2) for a total of 3 tomatoes.

I completed the back yard watering yesterday evening and spent some time training the back yard tomato plants as well.

This morning I spent about a half hour training the front yard tomato plants.

Tomato plants with new tomatoes include: White Zebra, Persimmon, Creme Brulee, Pineapple Pig and Red Boar(1).
