Pulled Out 18 Tomato Plants

There was no harvest on Saturday.

However, the gardeners came and pulled out plenty of tomato plants. The carnage included Sweet 100, Copper River, Big Bite, Carmello, Thessaloniki, Giant Syrian, German Orange Strawberry, Snow White(1), Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek, Delicious, Neves Azorean Red, Italian Heirloom, Amazon Chocolate, Amana Orange, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Watermelon and Pineapple(2) -- 18 plants in all. I might have kept one or two of those, but a vast majority were ready to go. We're left with 6 plants left but one of them was missed by the gardeners. We have 5 good ones remaining.

Both Husky Cherry Red tomato plants are still going even though they were planted in February. They're tough, rugged plants that take a licking and keep on ticking...

Yesterday got up to 101.9. The heat just will not let up for any appreciable period of time...

Today's harvest includes 4 Husky Cherry Red(2), SunGold and Husky Cherry Red(1) for a total of 6 tomatoes.

Harvested 950 Husky Cherry Red(1) Tomatoes!

Yesterday's harvest includes SunGold, Sweet 100, Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), German Orange Strawberry and Snow White(1) for a total of 6 tomatoes.

My wife pulled Ella's Pink Plum and Italian Tree.

And again, the heat is pounding the tomato plants and us: It got up to 102.6 degrees yesterday.

Today's harvest includes SunGold, Copper River, Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2) and Carmello for a total of 5 tomatoes.

We've now harvested 950 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes!

The gardeners are coming tomorrow and there will be a lot of plants pulled.

Pulled Three More Front Yard Tomato Plants

Monday's harvest includes 2 SunGold, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Sweet 100, Husky Cherry Red(2), Purple Dog Creek, Delicious and Neves Azorean Red for a total of 11 tomatoes

Today's harvest includes 2 Carmello, SunGold, Copper River, Snow White(1), Black and Brown Boar(2), Husky Cherry Red(1), Purple Dog Creek (7 ounces) and Delicious for a total of 9 tomatoes.

I forgot to mention the heat over the weekend. Friday: 105.6 degrees. Saturday: 103.9 degrees. Sunday wasn't so bad, 94.6 degrees. But any new tomato blooms are going to go sterile in such heat as the heat pounds the plant into submission.

Yesterday my wife pulled out Redfield Beauty, Porkchop(1) and Pierce's Pride(1). Only SunGold remains in the front yard.

No milestones hit, but we did pass 10,800 total harvested tomatoes for this year (10818).

Back Yard Harvest Twice Front Yard Harvest For 2012

Saturday's harvest includes 4 Delicious, 2 SunGold, 2 Amana Orange, 2 Big Bite, 2 Carmello, Copper River, Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), Thessaloniki, Speckled Roman(3), Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek (6 ounces) and Neves Azorean Red for a total of 20 tomatoes.

Saturday my wife and I plus about 30 of our friends and family celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at Castaways Restaurant in Burbank. It was a ton of fun for everyone involved.

I love you, sweetie!!

Today's harvest includes 5 Speckled Roman(3), 4 Delicious, 2 Neves Azorean Red, 2 SunGold, 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), Pierce's Pride(1), Oaxacan Pink, Husky Cherry Red(1), Thessaloniki, Snow White(1) and Amana Orange for a total of 21 tomatoes.

Several more tomato plants are ready to be pulled. We may be up to 10 more ready to come out.

The back yard harvest total is over twice the front yard harvest total (7201 vs 3597) for this year.

Harvested Over 500 Backyard Tomatoes This Month!

Today's harvest includes 4 Speckled Roman(3), 3 Delicious, 3 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Porkchop(1), 2 SunGold, Big Bite, Yellow Perfection, Carmello, Black and Brown Boar(2), Neves Azorean Red, Italian Heirloom and Snow White(2) for a total of 23 tomatoes.

Yikes! Yesterday got up to 105.3. That is...hot. This heat is wearing us out along with the tomato plants.

With our aggressive plant pulling we probably won't make my prediction of 900 tomatoes this month. Also, I didn't expect it to stay so hot for so long.

We've now harvested over 500 back yard tomatoes this month (517)!

Pulled Five Front Yard Tomato Plants

Today's harvest includes 4 Snow White(1), 3 Snow White(2), 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), 2 Delicious, 2 SunGold, Porkchop(1), Ella's Pink Plum, Yellow Perfection, Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), Carmello, Speckled Roman(3), Italian Heirloom (6 ounces), Amana Orange, Aunt Ruby's German Green and Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red for a total of 24 tomatoes.

My wife pulled out Jaune Flamme(1), Black Krim(1), Indigo Apple(1), Oaxacan Jewel and Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, all from the front yard. Indigo Apple(1) was a bit of a surprise, but it was clearly near the end anyway. Also, she watered the front yard, including the remaining front yard tomatoes.

We've now harvested over 50 Delicious tomatoes (51).

And we've passed the 10,700 mark for the year (10706).

On a somber note, on this date last year our Manchester Terrier was put to sleep. Buster's body failed him but he never failed us.

Harvested Over 7000 Back Yard Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 5 Big Bite, 3 Snow White(1), 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Delicious, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), SunGold, Ella's Pink Plum, Carmello, Purple Dog Creek, Neves Azorean Red, Aunt Ruby's German Green and Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red for a total of 23 tomatoes.

Ugh, it's hot again. Yesterday: 100.7 degrees.

We've now harvested over 7000 back yard tomatoes (7075)! Actually we passed the 7000 mark a couple of days ago. I noticed it yesterday and letting the world know about it now.

My wife watered the tomatoes in the containers.

It's Still Hot Out There...

Today's harvest includes 11 Snow White(1), 6 Black Cherry(1), 5 Black Cherry(2), 5 Snow White(2), 4 SunGold, 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Red Currant, 2 Big Bite (6 ounces), 2 Yellow Perfection, 2 Carmello, 2 Nebraska Wedding, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), Marianna's Peace (6 ounces), Indigo Apple(2), Pierce's Pride(1), Japanese Black Trifele, Purple Dog Creek (6.5 ounces) and Italian Heirloom for a total of 55 tomatoes.

Sunday's high: 97.0 degrees. Yesterday's high was 100.0 degrees. It's still hot...

We haven't harvested a Pierce's Pride(1) in a month. The last harvested Pierce's Pride(1) was on August 4.

We gave some tomatoes and two jars of tomato jelly to a friendly dog walker in our neighborhood.

No milestones today...

Harvested Over 750 Black Cherry(1) Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 8 Black Cherry(1), 7 Snow White(1), 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Black Cherry(2), 3 Japanese Black Trifele, 2 Carmello, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Thessaloniki, 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Oaxacan Jewel, 2 Red Currant, 2 Big Bite, SunGold, Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek (6 ounces), Marmara, Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, Red Boar(2) and Snow White(2) for a total of 49 tomatoes.

Yesterday we did nothing with the tomatoes except harvest them in the morning. After the harvest I took a shower and my wife and I spent the morning at Paradise Cove. We left around noon, drove home, changed into swim trunks and went to a friend's house to swim in their pool. We were there for several hours and had a lot of fun! We drove home, showered, then went out to dinner. After dinner we washed the dog. I walked him at night. In essence we relaxed all day and thanked ourselves at the end of the day for doing so.

We've now harvested over 750 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (751) and over 350 Snow White(1) tomatoes (351) this year!

Pulled Green Grape Tomato Plant

Today's harvest includes 5 Yellow Perfection, 5 Black Cherry(1), 4 SunGold, 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Thessaloniki, 3 Japanese Black Trifele, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Snow White(2), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Ella's Pink Plum, Big Bite, Carmello, Nebraska Wedding (7 ounces), Purple Dog Creek (8 ounces), Black Cherry(2), Pineapple(2) (11.5 ounces), Marmara and Tolstoi for a total of 40 tomatoes.

It's hot again...104.0 on Tuesday, 103.0 yesterday.

Green Grape was pulled yesterday. I was hoping to make it to 100 tomatoes for Green Grape but it wasn't meant to be. My wife pulled it and found another maturing tomato to reach 99 tomatoes. I added it into yesterday's totals. Also, she finished watering the back yard tomatoes.

When was the last day that I didn't harvest a Husky Cherry Red tomato?

No milestones were hit with this harvest. We're plodding along...

Harvested Over 10,000 Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 7 SunGold, 6 Indigo Rose, 5 Snow White(1), 4 Black Cherry(2), 4 Carmello, 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Snow White(2), 2 Big Bite (7 ounces), 2 Gypsy, 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Red Currant, 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), Redfield Beauty, Indigo Apple(1), Brad's Black Heart (12.5 ounces), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Sweet Million, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), Thessaloniki, Husky Cherry Red(1), Japanese Black Trifele, Watermelon (7 ounces) and SunSugar for a total of 53 tomatoes.

We've now harvested over 10,000 tomatoes for the year (10046)!! Also, we've harvested over 6500 tomatoes in the back yard (6539) and over 3500 tomatoes in the front yard (3507). It's been a great year so far!

The Brad's Black Heart is a late beauty!

We are now within 100 SunGold tomatoes of our all time harvest for one plant per year (Matt's Wild Cherry, 2727 tomatoes) with 2628 harvested tomatoes so far this year.

It got up to 99 yesterday with as low as 10 percent humidity. It should be even warmer today.

My wife should be pulling out some tomato plants today.

I added fertilizer to the container plants this morning.

We've now harvested over 200 Red Currant tomatoes (201), over 50 Big Bite tomatoes (51) and 50 Thessaloniki tomatoes.

Harvested 150 Black Cherry(1) Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 11 SunGold, 6 Indigo Rose, 4 Yellow Perfection, 3 Black Cherry(1), 2 Oaxacan Jewel (6.5 ounces), 2 Carmello, 2 Thessaloniki, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Snow White(2), Chinese Tea, Porkchop(1), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Big Bite, Pink Furry Boar, Crimson Cushion, Husky Cherry Red(1), German Orange Strawberry, Japanese Black Trifele, Black Cherry(2), Gypsy and Red Boar(1) for a total of 49 tomatoes.

Back when we were harvesting 162 tomatoes a day I mentioned we might only be harvesting about 30 by the end of the month. We're getting there...

The weather is warming up again...

We almost hit some major milestones today. Tomorrow we'll hit at least three milestones.

We've now harvested 150 Black Cherry(2) tomatoes and 50 Japanese Black Trifele tomatoes this year.

Harvested Over 3000 Tomatoes This Month!

Today's harvest includes 14 Yellow Perfection, 13 SunGold, 10 Snow White(1), 10 Snow White(2), 7 Indigo Rose, 3 Red Currant, 3 Thessaloniki, 3 Indigo Apple(2), 3 Gypsy, 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Carmello, 3 Husky Cherry Red(1), 3 German Orange Strawberry, 2 SunSugar, 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Delicious (9 ounces), 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Oaxacan Jewel (6 ounces, 6 ounces), Indigo Apple(1), Speckled Roman(2), Pink Furry Boar, Oaxacan Pink, Speckled Roman(3), Purple Dog Creek (7 ounces), Italian Heirloom and Black Cherry(2) for a total of 96 tomatoes.

I didn't harvest yesterday, as planned. It was my wife's birthday for starters. We celebrated with her side of the family down in south Orange County. Also, I got a new car smogged, and we visited Roger's Gardens for a tomato tasting before making it all the way down for a birthday celebration. Happy Birthday sweetie, I love you!!

My wife told me that she pulled out Pierce's Pride(2) on Thursday. We tend to pull a lot of tomatoes in the first week on September and we're on track to do the same thing this year.

We've now harvested over 3000 tomatoes this month (3012)! We've also harvested over 2600 SunGold tomatoes (2610), over 900 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes (901) and over 200 Yellow Perfection tomatoes (209) this year.

Harvested 300 Snow White(2) Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 24 Snow White(2), 12 SunGold, 7 Black Cherry(1), 6 Carmello (9 ounces), 4 Yellow Perfection, 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Marmara, 3 Husky Cherry Red(1), 3 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Thessaloniki, 2 Red Currant, 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Redfield Beauty, Nyagous(1), Black and Brown Boar(1), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Pink Furry Boar, Crimson Cushion, German Orange Strawberry, Delicious, Black Cherry(2), Pineapple(2) and Red Boar(1) for a total of 87 tomatoes.

Snow White(1) has such a high total because my wife picked 15 of them in the afternoon. I added it to today's total because I don't plan to harvest tomorrow.

Other than that, not much happening. There's no more tomato plants ready to be pulled (though many are close) and they're too fragile to train. The weather is back to normal again.

We've now harvested exactly 300 Snow White(2) tomatoes for the year!

Harvested 100 Carmello Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 15 SunGold, 10 Carmello, 9 Snow White(2), 7 Black Cherry(1), 6 Red Currant, 3 Oaxacan Pink, 3 Indigo Rose, 3 Big Bite, 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Dr. Wyche's Yellow, 2 Oaxacan Jewel (7 ounces), 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Red Boar(1), 2 Thessaloniki, Indigo Apple(1), Pineapple(1) (8.5 ounces), Nyagous(1), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Brad's Black Heart (6.5 ounces), Pink Furry Boar, Snow White(1), Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek, Delicious, Black Cherry(2), Amana Orange, Noire Charbonneuse(2) and Tolstoi for a total of 86 tomatoes.

My wife pulled Pineapple Pig, Yellow Furry Boar, Red Boar(2) and Porkchop(2). My wife spotted the tomato on Yellow Furry Boar but declared it as not worth saving and pulled the plant.

If you'll notice, all four tomatoes were developed at Wild Boar Farms. Wild Boar Farms has some tremendous varieties and we will always grow tomatoes developed there, but the plants simply do not last in the heat of the San Fernando Valley.

Carmello is going through a second wind, as well as Red Currant to a lesser degree.

Also, my wife watered all of the back yard tomatoes.

We've now harvested over 700 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (706) and 100 Carmello tomatoes this year.

Harvested Over 2000 Tomatoes In The Back Yard This Month!

Today's harvest includes 20 SunGold, 11 Black Cherry(1), 5 Red Currant, 5 Carmello, 4 Big Bite, 4 Snow White(1), 4 Snow White(2), 4 Oaxacan Jewel (7 ounces, 9 ounces), 4 Oaxacan Pink, 4 Yellow Perfection, 3 Dr. Wyche's Yellow, 2 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Jaune Flamme(2), Husky Cherry Red(2), Indigo Apple(1), Ella's Pink Plum, Pink Furry Boar, Thessaloniki, German Orange Strawberry, Speckled Roman(3), Delicious, Gypsy, Marmara, SunSugar and Green Grape for a total of 88 tomatoes.

My wife pulled out Speckled Roman(1) yesterday. And she continues to make sauce and freeze it, as well as give away some to friends and family.

I added tomato fertilizer to the container plants this morning.

Yellow Furry Boar has one more tomato to mature so it's spared the chopping block for now. But Jaune Flamme(2) can go.

We've now harvested over 2000 tomatoes in the back yard this month (2013)!

Harvested Over 100 Indigo Rose Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 21 Black Cherry(1), 16 SunGold, 14 Snow White(2), 11 Husky Cherry Red(1), 10 Husky Cherry Red(2), 9 Snow White(1), 7 SunSugar, 5 Yellow Perfection, 5 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 4 Indigo Apple(2), 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Carmello, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Pink Furry Boar, 2 Nyagous(1), 2 Red Boar(2), 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Red Boar(1), 2 Ella's Pink Plum, 2 Dr. Wyche's Yellow, 2 Indigo Apple(1), Kellogg's Breakfast, Chinese Tea, Oaxacan Pink, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Sweet Million, Red Currant, Big Bite, Pineapple Pig, German Orange Strawberry (7.5 ounces), Japanese Black Trifele, Neves Azorean Red (15 ounces), Italian Heirloom (9 ounces), Amazon Chocolate, Noire Charbonneuse(2), Watermelon (7 ounces), Pineapple(2) (22 ounces), Gypsy, Marmara, Taxi and Tolstoi for a total of 147 tomatoes.

Yesterday's high: 103.2. It's still hot!

I noticed a flaw in the on line spreadsheet yesterday. The amount of harvested Neves Azorean Red was too high. I found the flaw and fixed it. The July numbers adjusted downward. The original reported amount of 6088 plummeted to...6068.

What a beautiful Pineapple(2)! I don't think I've pulled such a heavy tomato this late in the season. This tomato buried the pretty 15 ounce Neves Azorean Red, another good tomato.

We have more plants to pull.

I don't plan to harvest tomorrow.

We've now harvested over 850 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes (857), over 100 Indigo Rose tomatoes (101) and 50 Speckled Roman(3) tomatoes this year.

Harvested Over 9000 Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 34 Black Cherry(1), 18 SunGold, 15 Husky Cherry Red(2), 14 Snow White(2), 8 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Snow White(1), 4 Carmello, 4 Red Boar(1), 4 Indigo Apple(2), 4 Yellow Furry Boar, 3 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 3 Redfield Beauty, 2 Vorlon, 2 SunSugar, 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Nyagous(1), Speckled Roman(1), Black and Brown Boar(1), Ella's Pink Plum, Pineapple Pig, Brad's Black Heart (7 ounces), Oaxacan Pink (6 ounces), Black and Brown Boar(2), Italian Heirloom, Amazon Chocolate, Black Cherry(2), Earl of Edgecombe, Watermelon (7 ounces), Pineapple(2) (19 ounces) and Indigo Rose for a total of 142 tomatoes.

Yesterday's high: 99.7 degrees. There's something wrong when 100 degrees feels like a relief...

My wife took out Persimmon, Ramapo and Omar's Lebanese. We harvested 16 Persimmon and 7 Omar's Lebanese but both were successful plants. It's not just numbers, but the quality and size of the harvested tomatoes.

My wife also completed the front yard watering and most of the back yard tomatoes as well. There's more to remove but I need to look them over before deciding which ones go. She also made more sauce from our tomatoes.

Last night I tried Yellow Furry Boar again as part of dinner. There was no fur on any of our Yellow Furry Boars this year but it tasted smooth, juicy and quite good. Our August tomatoes still have it...

Today's harvest was definitely heftier than it has been in a while. The Pineapple(2) looks beautiful!

We've now harvested over 9000 tomatoes for the year (9104)! Also, we've harvested over 1500 back yard tomatoes this month (1568).

We've harvested over 600 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (611) and over 50 Indigo Apple(2) tomatoes (57) this year.

And on a personal note, this is my 1000th blog post!

Harvested Over 6000 Tomatoes In July!

Today's harvest includes 40 SunGold, 19 Black Cherry(1), 17 Husky Cherry Red(2), 10 Snow White(1), 6 Snow White(2), 5 Garden Peach, 5 Husky Cherry Red(1), 4 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 4 Black and Brown Boar(2), 4 Sweet Baby Girl, 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Indigo Rose, 3 Jaune Flamme(2), 3 Earl of Edgecombe (6 ounces, 8 ounces), 3 Black Cherry(2), 2 Green Grape, 2 German Orange Strawberry (8.5 ounces), 2 Speckled Roman(3) (6 ounces), 2 Carmello, 2 Gypsy, 2 Red Boar(1), 2 Indigo Apple(2), Berkeley Tie Dye, Sweet Million, Red Currant, Pineapple(1) (10 ounces), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) (6.5 ounces), Pink Furry Boar, Oaxacan Pink (7.5 ounces), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Big Bite, Pineapple Pig, Japanese Black Trifele (6 ounces), Italian Heirloom (10 ounces), Creme Brulee, Yellow Furry Boar, Purple Dog Creek (9 ounces), Amana Orange (10 ounces), Delicious (9 ounces), Red Boar(2), Amazon Chocolate, Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, Taxi, Porkchop(2) and SunSugar for a total of 172 tomatoes.

We've now harvested over 6000 tomatoes for the month of July (6088)! This is a sign of a tremendous month. If time permits, I'll do a comparison with prior years (I didn't have time at the end of June to go across years). But I can state -- our tomatoes have been quite tasty (truly the only thing that matters), large and plentiful. Everything else is just noise.

Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) and Brown Berry need to be pulled.
