On Tuesday I harvested an Isis Candy.
Because we planted late this year, my wife left the fruit on the seedlings planted in the raised beds. I'm in complete agreement with that strategy. The roots of the tomato plants in the raised beds don't get that deep (the roots reach the original ground and essentially "hit the wall") so there simply isn't too much to lose by keeping the tomatoes on the vine.
My wife tried it a few days later and didn't like it. However, this is an early tomato. I'll wait for the big flush before making a judgment. That and I didn't taste this one ;)
On Saturday my wife planted Nebraska Wedding and San Marzano in the southwest raised bed. I dug two more holes for our last tomatoes...but our son woke up from a very late nap and my wife couldn't plant them.
Today my wife watered the front yard tomatoes.

Seven More Plants Pulled...
Today's harvest includes 5 Husky Cherry Red(1), SunGold, Ella's Pink Plum, German Orange Strawberry, Snow White(1) and Purple Dog Creek for a total of 10 tomatoes.
My wife pulled Nebraska Wedding and Speckled Roman(3) yesterday. But the day before there were five additional plants removed: Yellow Perfection, Red Currant, Matt's Wild Cherry Sweet Million and Oaxacan Pink. And there's still more plants that can be pulled...
No new milestones for today.

Fourteen Plants Pulled...
Today's harvest includes 10 Snow White(1), 3 Amana Orange, 3 Indigo Rose, 2 Snow White(2), 2 Carmello, 2 Delicious (6 ounces), Husky Cherry Red(1), Thessaloniki, Nebraska Wedding, Japanese Black Trifele, Pierce's Pride(1), Porkchop(1), SunGold, Ella's Pink Plum, Big Bite (6 ounces), Brad's Black Heart, Italian Heirloom, Marianna's Peace (6 ounces) and Marmara for a total of 35 tomatoes.
The gardeners did come and pull tomatoes. A lot of them, all in the back yard. The list includes Black Cherry(1), Brad's Black Heart, Black From Tula, Japanese Black Trifele, Black Cherry(2), Marianna's Peace, Noire Charbonneuse(2), Indigo Apple(2), Earl of Edgecombe, Gypsy, Marmara, Red Boar(1), Indigo Rose and Red Boar(2)...14 plants in all. And the ones I listed yesterday need to be removed as well.
Having noted that, I wasn't expecting either Black Cherry to be pulled. But it's done. The raised bed is now cleared out with the removal of Indigo Rose and Red Boar(2). The ground will be prepared for winter crops.
Some of the pulled plants had salvageable tomatoes, which were added to today's totals.
Will we break our all time record? Perhaps, but the removal of the two Black Cherry plants puts it in some doubt.
On a bookkeeping note, Garden Peach was pulled a while ago. I guessed the date as August 22.

It's Still Hot Out There...
Today's harvest includes 11 Snow White(1), 6 Black Cherry(1), 5 Black Cherry(2), 5 Snow White(2), 4 SunGold, 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Red Currant, 2 Big Bite (6 ounces), 2 Yellow Perfection, 2 Carmello, 2 Nebraska Wedding, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), Marianna's Peace (6 ounces), Indigo Apple(2), Pierce's Pride(1), Japanese Black Trifele, Purple Dog Creek (6.5 ounces) and Italian Heirloom for a total of 55 tomatoes.
Sunday's high: 97.0 degrees. Yesterday's high was 100.0 degrees. It's still hot...
We haven't harvested a Pierce's Pride(1) in a month. The last harvested Pierce's Pride(1) was on August 4.
We gave some tomatoes and two jars of tomato jelly to a friendly dog walker in our neighborhood.

Pulled Green Grape Tomato Plant
Today's harvest includes 5 Yellow Perfection, 5 Black Cherry(1), 4 SunGold, 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Thessaloniki, 3 Japanese Black Trifele, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Snow White(2), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Ella's Pink Plum, Big Bite, Carmello, Nebraska Wedding (7 ounces), Purple Dog Creek (8 ounces), Black Cherry(2), Pineapple(2) (11.5 ounces), Marmara and Tolstoi for a total of 40 tomatoes.
It's hot again...104.0 on Tuesday, 103.0 yesterday.
Green Grape was pulled yesterday. I was hoping to make it to 100 tomatoes for Green Grape but it wasn't meant to be. My wife pulled it and found another maturing tomato to reach 99 tomatoes. I added it into yesterday's totals. Also, she finished watering the back yard tomatoes.
When was the last day that I didn't harvest a Husky Cherry Red tomato?
No milestones were hit with this harvest. We're plodding along...

Harvested Over 9500 Tomatoes This Year!
Today's harvest includes 16 Black Cherry(1), 15 SunGold, 7 Husky Cherry Red(1), 5 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 5 Snow White(2), 4 Red Currant, 4 Snow White(1), 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Pineapple Pig, 3 Indigo Apple(2), 3 Yellow Perfection, 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Oaxacan Pink (6 ounces), 2 SunSugar, 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Ella's Pink Plum, Nyagous(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Big Bite, Pink Furry Boar, Carmello, Nebraska Wedding (8.5 ounces), German Orange Strawberry (7 ounces), Delicious, Amazon Chocolate, Black Cherry(2), Taxi, Gypsy, Red Boar(2) and Jaune Flamme(2) for a total of 93 tomatoes.
I forgot to mention that we tried one of our large Pineapple(2) tomatoes for dinner on Saturday. Our verdict: mixed. The flavor wasn't there. It wasn't a bad flavor, just little to no flavor. The tomato itself was quite good -- firm where you wanted it to be, and soft where you wanted it to be. Just very little flavor.
Yesterday's high: 100.2. We didn't do much all day and the tomatoes were left to bake some more...
This morning I noticed a lot of new growth on SunGold. I'm expecting the weather to break in the near future, allowing the new blooms to germinate. Then SunGold will get a second wave a few weeks later. It's already a safe bet that we'll break our all time high of 2727 Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes harvested in a year. It's a little early to predict over 3000 but based on the new growth during this blistering heat, but that's what I predict.
We've now harvested over 9500 tomatoes for the year (9517) and over 2500 tomatoes for the month of August (2585). It looks like we'll reach 10,000 tomatoes this month.
Also, we've harvested 300 Snow White(1) tomatoes, over 100 Redfield Beauty tomatoes (102), over 50 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red tomatoes (54) and over 50 Dr. Wyche's Yellow tomatoes (51) this year.

There was no harvest on Thursday. Neither of us slept well. It got up to 107.2 on Wednesday and we didn't cool down the bedroom like we should have. My wife is ill and our bedroom was simply too hot for us to sleep well. I woke up before 5 in the morning, sweating. So I took care of a couple errands and went out for breakfast.
And yesterday it got up to 109.4 degrees. Yikes! But we cooled the room this time and the night was a tad cooler than the night before. We both slept well, certainly better than the night before.
But boy is it hot. Some of our plants are becoming bone dry. To be fair the plants will become bone dry anyway, just not so soon.
My wife pulled out Big Zebra yesterday and I believe she watered the pots the day before.
We've now harvested over 2300 SunGold tomatoes (2333), over 200 Snow White(1) tomatoes (213) and over 50 Chinese Tea tomatoes (51)!

Harvested Pineapple(2) Tomato!
Today's harvest includes 24 SunGold, 13 Snow White(1), 8 Black Cherry(2), 7 Sweet Baby Girl, 6 Snow White(2), 5 Sweet Million, 5 Crimson Cushion, 4 Sweet 100, 4 Husky Cherry Red(2), 3 SunSugar, 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Big Zebra (12.5 ounces), 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), 2 Neves Azorean Red, 2 Amazon Chocolate, 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Berkeley Tie Dye, 2 Earl of Edgecombe, 2 German Orange Strawberry, Pineapple(2) (14 ounces) (new), Speckled Roman(1), White Zebra, Black and Brown Boar(1), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Pineapple(1) (8 ounces), Brad's Black Heart (6 ounces), Pink Furry Boar, Oaxacan Pink, Husky Cherry Red(1), Nebraska Wedding (8 ounces), Garden Peach, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Marmara, Taxi, Indigo Rose, Jaune Flamme(2) and Porkchop(2) for a total of 125 tomatoes.
The harvested Pineapple(2) is a beauty! This is a grafted tomato, a birthday gift from our friend Allison.
Copper River has a growing tomato! I was looking for possible tomato plants to pull and I'll be darned it has a growing tomato!
I hope it can survive the heat. Yesterday it got up to 108.1 degrees at Pierce College!
My wife watered the front yard tomatoes in the morning after pulling out Chile Verde.
We've now harvested 800 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes and over 100 Black Cherry(2) tomatoes (107).

This is being written just after the tomato tasting party at Loteria Grill but I'll save that for tomorrow's post.
Yesterday my wife completed watering the back yard. She also made fig jam. However, she said she used the wrong pectin so it's more of a fig sauce/syrup than a jam.
In the evening we tried Aunt Ruby's German Green and it was delicious!
We've now harvested over 7500 tomatoes this year (7576) and we're still going strong. This could be a tremendous year. Also we've harvested over 650 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes (657) for the year.

Harvested 150 Snow White(1) Tomatoes
Today's harvest includes 24 SunGold, 17 Black Cherry(1), 11 Snow White(1), 6 Husky Cherry Red(1), 5 Husky Cherry Red(2), 5 Redfield Beauty, 5 Snow White(2), 4 Black and Brown Boar(2), 4 Yellow Perfection, 3 Garden Peach, 3 White Zebra, 3 Green Grape, 3 Berkeley Tie Dye, 3 Oaxacan Pink (8 ounces, 6 ounces), 3 Sweet Baby Girl, 3 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Black Cherry(2), 2 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Indigo Rose, 2 SunSugar, 2 Gypsy, 2 German Orange Strawberry (9 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Black Krim(2), 2 Yellow Furry Boar, 2 Black From Tula (12 ounces), 2 Nyagous(1), Jaune Flamme(1), Black and Brown Boar(1), Sweet Million, Ella's Pink Plum, Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), Big Bite (6 ounces), Thessaloniki, Nebraska Wedding (9 ounces), Creme Brulee, Persimmon (10 ounces), Italian Heirloom, Amazon Chocolate (7 ounces), Amana Orange (7 ounces), Red Boar(1), Noire Charbonneuse(2), Ramapo (7 ounces) and Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red for a total of 141 tomatoes.
Imagine a day when SunGold isn't the high harvest amount for the day. It could happen soon...
Not a lot happening...my wife watered more of the back yard tomatoes as well as using the dehydrator to process some of the tomatoes. The harvested German Orange Strawberry tomatoes look nice, taking on their traditional oxheart shape.
We've now harvested 150 Snow White(1) tomatoes.

Harvested Over 6000 Tomatoes This Year!
Today's harvest includes 40 SunGold, 33 Black Cherry(1), 28 Husky Cherry Red(1), 16 Husky Cherry Red(2), 8 Black Cherry(2), 8 Snow White(1), 6 Indigo Rose, 6 Black and Brown Boar(2), 6 Yellow Perfection, 6 Snow White(2), 5 Pink Furry Boar, 5 SunSugar, 5 Garden Peach, 5 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 4 Green Grape, 4 Amazon Chocolate (7.5 ounces, 8 ounces), 4 Thessaloniki (7 ounces), 3 Creme Brulee (6 ounces, 6 ounces), 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Black Krim(2), 2 Speckled Roman(2), 2 Brown Berry, 2 Black and Brown Boar(1), 2 Earl of Edgecombe, 2 Marmara (6 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Yellow Furry Boar, 2 Crimson Cushion, Marianna's Peace (16 ounces), Chinese Tea, Watermelon (8 ounces), Black Krim(1) (8 ounces), Nebraska Wedding (9 ounces), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2), Jaune Flamme(1), Indigo Apple(1), Big Zebra, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Japanese Black Trifele, Taxi, Purple Dog Creek (10.5 ounces), Persimmon (11 ounces), Red Boar(2) and Jaune Flamme(2) for a total of 232 tomatoes.
I'm a little surprised that the numbers have stayed as solid for this long. SunGold is finally starting to fade but the two Black Cherry and the two Snow White plants have picked up the slack.
The tomato sizes are starting to dwindle and the plants are looking ragged. Noire Charbonneuse(1), Chinese Tea and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) may not last much longer. However, many plants will have a second wind. Sweet Baby Girl already has a second wind and has maturing tomatoes again.
My wife watered the back yard containers.
We've now harvested over 3000 tomatoes in the back yard for the month of July (3151) and over 6000 tomatoes for the year (6187).

The harvested Big Zebra is a beauty! My wife was crowing about how beautiful it looked.
I took a look at Neves Azorean Red this morning. The plant isn't too tall but it has a few unripe tomatoes. I haven't paid any attention to it because nothing's maturing on the vines. However, a week ago I thought the same thing about Earl of Edgecombe until I took a look at it and found several slightly overripe tomatoes.
My wife watered parts of the back yard yesterday.
We've now harvested over 1800 SunGold tomatoes for the year (1843). And we've now harvested over 3500 tomatoes in the back yard (3569) and over 5000 tomatoes for July (5091).

Harvested Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red!
Today's harvest includes 99 SunGold, 24 Husky Cherry Red(2), 23 Husky Cherry Red(1), 13 Black Cherry(1), 10 Black Cherry(2), 10 Snow White(1), 8 Garden Peach, 5 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 5 Gypsy, 5 SunSugar, 5 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg (7 ounces, 7 ounces), 4 Jaune Flamme(2), 3 Japanese Black Trifele (8 ounces), 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Snow White(2), 3 Matt's Wild Cherry, 3 Speckled Roman(3), 3 Pierce's Pride (8 ounces, 7.5 ounces, 7.5 ounces), 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Red Boar(2), 2 Big Bite (11.5 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Jaune Flamme(1), 2 Green Grape, 2 Yellow Currant, 2 Yellow Furry Boar, 2 Speckled Roman(2), Chinese Tea, Porkchop(1) (8 ounces), Oaxacan Pink (8.5 ounces), Indigo Apple(1), Brad's Black Heart (11 ounces), Amazon Chocolate (12 ounces), Thessaloniki, Nebraska Wedding, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), Berkeley Tie Dye (6 ounces), Marianna's Peace (7.5 ounces), Delicious, Black From Tula (6 ounces), Crimson Cushion, Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek (15 ounces), Italian Heirloom (7.5 ounces), Earl of Edgecombe (8.5 ounces), Red Boar(1) and Marmara for a total of 269 tomatoes.
Yesterday it got up to 101 degrees at Pierce College. That seemed to reflect in today's harvest. There were a lot of tomatoes but it didn't look like it weighed more than yesterday's harvest. A lot of cherry tomatoes in today's harvest. Not that we're complaining...
We brought a lot of tomatoes to the "seed lady" to be distributed throughout their neighborhood. It looks like we'll make a tomato donation to charity soon. It would have happened Friday but time but my wife ran out of time...
A Persimmon branch got so heavy it simply doubled over. This is not the first time such a thing occurred but it is the first time that it felt dangerous to tape it back into position. The tomatoes were so heavy I thought I would break the branch in two. So I took one of my tomato gloves and laid it between the fallen tomatoes and the ground.
An Italian Tree is maturing.
We've now harvested over 1600 SunGold tomatoes (1603) and over 500 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes (501). Also, we've now harvested over 2000 tomatoes in the front yard (2070), over 4000 tomatoes in the month of July (4149) and over 5000 tomatoes for the year (5013)!

Well, Earl of Edgecombe was a complete surprise! All four of them were a vibrant deep orange color. All of them were hidden beneath the canopy of leaves around the plant. On a whim I decided to look inside the canopy and hey, look what I found!
We tried an Earl of Edgecombe for breakfast. It was pretty mushy but the flavor still came through. Unfortunately I picked these four about two days too late. That's not the fault of the tomato, it's my fault for not checking sooner. There's another one that should be ready tomorrow.
I did something I hadn't done in a couple of weeks -- I used tomato tape on a lot of branches, especially in the front yard.
My wife finished watering the back yard.
We've now harvested over 1500 SunGold tomatoes (1504) and over 100 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (103).

This is the first day in quite a while where I didn't harvest a new tomato. But tomorrow I'm almost certain to harvest a good sized Omar's Lebanese.
As you can tell, we are clearly in "high tide". But the "heaviest" day felt like it was two days ago. I suspect we had bigger tomatoes on Sunday.
Having said that, this harvest is remarkable. We've got some great tomatoes! Porkchop(1) looks great. So does Persimmon.
Note that throughout the "high tide", the SunGold/Husky Cherry Red harvest accounts for over half of the tomatoes. These plants aren't going to go forever...
My wife spent most of the day both processing and giving away tomatoes. She also pulled Green Zebra. I used the Green Zebra cage to prop up Black Cherry(1). I found a "school" of tomatoes in the doubled over "fold".
My wife also watered the front yard tomatoes.
Amana Orange is maturing. That was the yellow tomato I couldn't identify previously.
We've now harvested over 1200 SunGold tomatoes (1207). We've also harvested over 1500 tomatoes in the front yard this year (1555), 1500 back yard tomatoes in July (1596) and over 3500 tomatoes for the year (3749).

Well, there's good news: I think I figured out what's eating some of our tomatoes. There's bad news: I think I figured out what's eating some of our tomatoes. While harvesting in the back yard, a rat was walking across our north cinder block wall.
Technically I didn't complete the harvest. I left the last row of the back yard in the interest of time.
My wife spent almost all day processing tomatoes in various forms. This morning she took all the smaller tomatoes, added oil and began to roast them in the oven.
Maturing tomatoes include Paul Robeson and Omar's Lebanese. I know there are others.
Is Nyagous(2) another Speckled Roman? There are similarities...
Today's Pineapple Pig harvest looks great.
We've now harvested 100 SunSugar tomatoes this year. Also, we've now harvested over 2000 back yard tomatoes this year (2031) and over 2500 tomatoes for July (2582)

13 More Plants With Tomatoes; 2 Plants With Maturing Tomatoes!
Yesterday's harvest: 2 Husky Cherry Red(1). Today's harvest: 2 Husky Cherry Red(1).
Now Husky Cherry Red(1) has passed Husky Cherry Red(2) in total production: 14 tomatoes for Husky Cherry Red(1) and 12 tomatoes for Husky Cherry Red(2).
I took a closer look at the tomato plants over the last couple of days. You know the story, more "training". I added a stake to Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1). I used tomato tape for a wayward branch on Husky Cherry Red(1). As the plants get taller and there's less cage room for training, I'll simply use tomato tape to tie back some of the wayward branches. As the weeks progress there will be more and more rolls of tomato tape and stakes being used.
In my last blog post I indicated that I knew there were more plants with tomatoes. Uh, I wasn't kidding. There are 13 more plants with growing tomatoes. The lastest list includes Amana Orange, Noire Charbonneuse(2), Snow White(2), Big Zebra, Green Zebra, Nebraska Wedding, Pierce's Pride(1), Vorlon, Marmara, Snow White(1), Speckled Roman(3), Delicious and Ramapo.
SunGold and SunSugar have maturing tomatoes. SunGold has already reached the top of the cage. In fact, let me see if I can get a reasonable picture of it.
As you know, it's only June 3. How tall will this plant get in 60 more days? It's only been in the ground for 57 days.
Having said that, the height of the plant isn't the payoff window. It's the tomatoes! You may be able to tell from the image that the plant is not only tall, it's quite thick. There are hundreds and hundreds of tomatoes on the plant. We'll see how they taste. We'll have plenty to choose from in the upcoming weeks.

Planted Five More Seedlings
Last night I dug three more holes, one in the backyard cutout area and two holes east of the lemon tree. I continued to hit significant asphalt and rocks, but the chunks weren't as big as around the redwood raised bed. Pesky, but not overwhelming.
In these holes my wife planted Black Krim, Brad's Black Heart and Nebraska Wedding.
She also planted Pierce's Pride and Sweet Baby Girl in pots.
My wife also watered the front yard tomato plants.
We're slowly but surely getting them into the ground. The upside -- the holes are deep and the debris is being removed. The downside -- it takes longer to plant and some of the remaining seedlings are getting very tall and potentially root bound.
