Harvested 175 Evan's Purple Pear Tomatoes This Year

Monday's harvest includes 9 SunGold, 5 Evan's Purple Pear, 3 Black Cherry, 3 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 German Orange Strawberry, 2 Sunchocola, 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), 2 Pineapple, 2 Black Icicle, 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), Porkchop(1), Blue Beauty, Neves Azorean Red, Solar Flare and Sugar Snack for a total of 37 tomatoes.

I pulled out five tomato plants. These were Momotaro, Blue Gold, Volunteer(4), Porkchop(2) and "Green Zebra" (not Green Zebra). All were back yard tomato plants. I was tempted to pull out more but decided at the last minute not to do so. Black Cherry, you're on borrowed time...

I did water the remaining back yard tomatoes in the ground one more time.

We did hit one milestone. We've now harvested exactly 175 Evan's Purple Pear tomatoes.

Today's harvest includes 4 SunGold, 2 Speckled Roman(1), 2 Porkchop(1), 2 Blue Beauty, 2 Matt's Wild Cherry, 2 Black Cherry, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), Pineapple, Black Icicle, Evan's Purple Pear, Beauty King, Husky Cherry Red(2) and Sugar Snack for a total of 21 tomatoes.

Again, the Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) tomato was nice while the rest was unremarkable.

The only thing notable for today was that I've been miscounting Beauty King as Solar Flare. Oh well. I won't go back and fix it.

Harvested Over 3500 Back Yard Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 8 Husky Cherry Red(1), 7 Black Cherry, 6 Sugar Snack, 5 Husky Cherry Red(2), 4 Pineapple, 3 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), 3 SunGold, 2 German Orange Strawberry, 2 Evan's Purple Pear, Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, Porkchop(1), Sunchocola, Blue Beauty, Neves Azorean Red (8 ounces) and Persimmon(1) (not Persimmon) for a total of 46 tomatoes.

The Neves Azorean Red is nice but it needs to lose the uneven maturing over the next day or so. One of the Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) tomatoes was nice, most of the Husky Cherry Red tomatoes are nice and the rest was unremarkable.

We've now harvested over 3500 tomatoes in the back yard this year (3535)! The back yard tomatoes keep chugging along. Also, we've harvested over 300 Sugar Snack tomatoes this year (302)!

Pink Berkeley Tie Dye and Great White are Winners!

Today's harvest includes 15 Matt's Wild Cherry, 9 Sunchocola, 8 SunGold, 8 Sugar Snack, 6 Evan's Purple Pear, 5 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 5 Orange Paruche, 5 Stupice, 5 Husky Cherry Red(2), 4 Bloody Butcher, 4 Bread and Salt (7 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 3 Indigo Rose, 3 Neves Azorean Red (13 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 German Orange Strawberry, 2 Aunt Ruby's German Green (6 ounces), 2 Garden Peach(1), Speckled Roman(1), Indigo Apple, Porkchop(1) (6 ounces), Yellow Perfection, Adriana's Grande, Blue Gold, Pineapple, Speckled Roman(2), Jaune Flamme, Black Icicle, Solar Flare and "Green Zebra" (not Green Zebra) for a total of 98 tomatoes.

Today's harvest star is Neves Azorean Red. My wife instantly noticed the large Neves Azorean Red on the counter this morning, even though we still have parts of prior harvests on the counter as well.

Last night my wife made a two panini sandwiches. Inside one of them was Pink Berkeley Tie Dye and the other had Great White. Both were warm. The Pink Berkeley Tie Dye was delicious and almost refreshing, though it had the high acid kick at the end. Great White was quite good, too. But I think Great White makes a good "support" tomato, such as in a warm panini sandwich. If Great White were eaten standalone, it might be a little dull while Pink Berkeley Tie Dye can certainly be eaten solo and have it be memorable.

There are several plants to be pulled. Adriana's Grande is ready to go after an excellent July. I don't like the output of the current Black Krim tomatoes and Stupice is ready to go.

I beat the Thursday sprinklers this morning (Woo-hoo)! However, I tend to harvest quicker than normal. I've noticed that I tend to skip Black Cherry on sprinkler days, for what that's worth...

No milestones today.

Harvested Over 5000 Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 27 Matt's Wild Cherry, 21 Sunchocola, 19 Husky Cherry Red(2), 10 Orange Paruche, 10 Husky Cherry Red(1), 7 Evan's Purple Pear, 6 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 6 Indigo Rose, 6 SunGold, 5 Bloody Butcher, 5 Black Cherry, 5 Garden Peach(2), 5 Green Grape, 4 Bread and Salt (6 ounces, 9 ounces, 8.5 ounces, 10 ounces), 4 Volunteer(4), 4 Snow White, 4 Sugar Snack, 4 Michael Pollan, 3 German Orange Strawberry (7 ounces), 3 Black Krim, 3 Nyagous, 3 Garden Peach(1), 2 Earl of Edgecombe, 2 Great White (7.5 ounces), 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), 2 Jaune Flamme, Porkchop(1), Yellow Perfection, Hungarian Heart (14 ounces), Blue Gold, Blue Beauty (8 ounces), Pineapple, Ananas Noire (6 ounces), Speckled Roman(2), Neves Azorean Red (12 ounces), Persimmon(1) (not Persimmon), Solar Flare, Stupice, Porkchop(2), Cherokee Purple and "Green Zebra" (not Green Zebra) for a total of 187 tomatoes.

Today's harvest numbers were goosed by the fact that there was no harvest yesterday.

The harvested Neves Azorean Red and Hungarian Heart tomatoes were beauties. And I continue to be impressed with the size and production of Bread and Salt.

After the harvest I pulled out Garden Peach(2). There were no more tomatoes to be harvested and the plant could have doubled for tumbleweed. There are a couple more to be pulled but we'll see if I find the time to pull them...

We've now harvested over 5000 tomatoes this year (5108)! Also, we've harvested over 2500 back yard tomatoes this year (2528), over 1200 Orange Paruche tomatoes this year (1207), over 500 tomatoes in August (569) and over 500 Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes this year (512)!

Harvested Over 2500 Front Yard Tomatoes This Year!

Sunday's harvest includes 16 Matt's Wild Cherry, 12 Sunchocola, 12 Husky Cherry Red(1), 8 Husky Cherry Red(2), 7 Volunteer(4), 7 Evan's Purple Pear, 6 Orange Paruche, 6 SunGold, 5 Pineapple, 5 Michael Pollan, 4 Bread and Salt (9 ounces, 6 ounces), 4 Speckled Roman(2), 4 Indigo Rose, 4 Black Cherry, 4 Green Grape, 3 Bloody Butcher, 3 Blue Beauty, 3 Jaune Flamme, 3 Garden Peach(2), 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), 2 Black Krim, 2 Nyagous, Speckled Roman(1), Blue Gold, Ananas Noire, Neves Azorean Red, Black Icicle, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Odoriko, Sugar Snack and Golden Rave for a total of 134 tomatoes.

I harvested in three sections on Sunday, as I commonly do. First, the front yard is harvested. This haul is brought in and a count is done. Second, the raised beds and the containers are harvested, brought in and counted. And third is the back yard tomatoes planted in the ground. When I brought in the third round, my wife had taken all the cherry tomatoes from the first two rounds and made a morning tomato salad for breakfast.

Before I brought in the third round I had added fertilizer to the container plants, the tomato plants in the raised bed area, Sunchocola and Orange Paruche. I pulled out the Odoriko tomato plant.

The tomato salad was excellent! We also had some of our "tomato chips", which are sliced tomatoes placed in the dehydrator and "cooked" for a couple of days. They were quite good as well.

Pierce College reported measurable rain last night, one hundredth of an inch. We had some trace amounts of rain a couple of times Sunday afternoon and evening. The muggy weather existed for another day.

No harvest done on Monday.

We've now harvested over 2500 tomatoes in the front yard this year (2526)! Also, we've harvested over 100 Indigo Rose toamtoes this year (101) and exactly 100 Garden Peach(2) tomatoes this year.

Harvested 3 New Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 6 Sunchocola, 6 Orange Paruche, 4 Stupice, Janet's Jacinthe Jewel (new), Hungarian Heart (new, 10 ounces), Matt's Wild Cherry (new), Yellow Perfection, SunGold and Garden Peach for a total of 22 tomatoes.

The container plants in the back yard -- that includes the ones in the raised beds -- got fertilizer and were double watered. My wife had already watered the containers by the south gate a few days ago, but I watered them again. The back yard plants in the ground were watered but only once.

I notieced that Neves Azorean Red has a growing tomato. I forgot to mention in my last blog post that Beauty King and Porkchop(2) also have growing tomatoes. And Cherokee Purple has a maturing tomato.

The new Janet's Jacinthe Jewel tomato looks pretty good, but the plant keeps looking worse and worse. I'll try to hit it with fertilizer and worm castings before watering it in on Sunday.

Speaking of which, Snow White and Golden Rave don't look that great either. But the German Orange Strawberry plant is nearly seven feet tall!

And as mentioned previously, the new Hungarian Heart came from a broken branch earlier this week. The maturation was due to stress.

Catching Up On Some Back Yard Plantings(2)

Here's the second half of this week's plantings...

Yesterday I dug the holes and my wife planted Neves Azorean Red, Snow White, Matt's Wild Cherry, Pierce's Pride, Black Krim and SunGold. I pulled out about a gallon and 3/4 of rocks and asphalt.

Today's plantings include Black Sea Man, Indigo Rose, Jaune Flamme, Black From Tula and Brad's Black Heart. A lot of dark tomatoes were planted today! I pulled out over 2 gallons of rock and asphalt.

My wife also started pulling out the grass in the area that I said we didn't have enough time to pull it all out. If we want to plant all our tomatoes, we'll need this area. We'll see how it goes...after all, this area didn't get the compost like the rest of the backyard planting area did. Still, it's better than nothing.

Pulled Out 18 Tomato Plants

There was no harvest on Saturday.

However, the gardeners came and pulled out plenty of tomato plants. The carnage included Sweet 100, Copper River, Big Bite, Carmello, Thessaloniki, Giant Syrian, German Orange Strawberry, Snow White(1), Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek, Delicious, Neves Azorean Red, Italian Heirloom, Amazon Chocolate, Amana Orange, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Watermelon and Pineapple(2) -- 18 plants in all. I might have kept one or two of those, but a vast majority were ready to go. We're left with 6 plants left but one of them was missed by the gardeners. We have 5 good ones remaining.

Both Husky Cherry Red tomato plants are still going even though they were planted in February. They're tough, rugged plants that take a licking and keep on ticking...

Yesterday got up to 101.9. The heat just will not let up for any appreciable period of time...

Today's harvest includes 4 Husky Cherry Red(2), SunGold and Husky Cherry Red(1) for a total of 6 tomatoes.

Pulled Three More Front Yard Tomato Plants

Monday's harvest includes 2 SunGold, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Sweet 100, Husky Cherry Red(2), Purple Dog Creek, Delicious and Neves Azorean Red for a total of 11 tomatoes

Today's harvest includes 2 Carmello, SunGold, Copper River, Snow White(1), Black and Brown Boar(2), Husky Cherry Red(1), Purple Dog Creek (7 ounces) and Delicious for a total of 9 tomatoes.

I forgot to mention the heat over the weekend. Friday: 105.6 degrees. Saturday: 103.9 degrees. Sunday wasn't so bad, 94.6 degrees. But any new tomato blooms are going to go sterile in such heat as the heat pounds the plant into submission.

Yesterday my wife pulled out Redfield Beauty, Porkchop(1) and Pierce's Pride(1). Only SunGold remains in the front yard.

No milestones hit, but we did pass 10,800 total harvested tomatoes for this year (10818).

Back Yard Harvest Twice Front Yard Harvest For 2012

Saturday's harvest includes 4 Delicious, 2 SunGold, 2 Amana Orange, 2 Big Bite, 2 Carmello, Copper River, Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), Thessaloniki, Speckled Roman(3), Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek (6 ounces) and Neves Azorean Red for a total of 20 tomatoes.

Saturday my wife and I plus about 30 of our friends and family celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at Castaways Restaurant in Burbank. It was a ton of fun for everyone involved.

I love you, sweetie!!

Today's harvest includes 5 Speckled Roman(3), 4 Delicious, 2 Neves Azorean Red, 2 SunGold, 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), Pierce's Pride(1), Oaxacan Pink, Husky Cherry Red(1), Thessaloniki, Snow White(1) and Amana Orange for a total of 21 tomatoes.

Several more tomato plants are ready to be pulled. We may be up to 10 more ready to come out.

The back yard harvest total is over twice the front yard harvest total (7201 vs 3597) for this year.

Harvested Over 500 Backyard Tomatoes This Month!

Today's harvest includes 4 Speckled Roman(3), 3 Delicious, 3 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Snow White(1), 2 Porkchop(1), 2 SunGold, Big Bite, Yellow Perfection, Carmello, Black and Brown Boar(2), Neves Azorean Red, Italian Heirloom and Snow White(2) for a total of 23 tomatoes.

Yikes! Yesterday got up to 105.3. That is...hot. This heat is wearing us out along with the tomato plants.

With our aggressive plant pulling we probably won't make my prediction of 900 tomatoes this month. Also, I didn't expect it to stay so hot for so long.

We've now harvested over 500 back yard tomatoes this month (517)!

Harvested Copper River!

Today's harvest includes 5 Snow White(1), 4 SunGold, 4 Delicious, 2 Copper River (new), 2 Amana Orange, 2 Aunt Ruby's German Green, 2 Snow White(2), 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Redfield Beauty, Speckled Roman(3) and Neves Azorean Red for a total of 28 tomatoes.

Well, it's good to see Copper River being harvested! The tomatoes are small but look pretty good. And today's two tomatoes for Copper River means it has rocketed past Italian Tree and tied with Chile Verde on the 2012 harvest totals. We've only harvested a single Italian Tree tomato. We got a second Italian Tree tomato, but it had too much blossom end rot to be usable when mature. Next up: Green Zebra with 3 harvested tomatoes.

I don't think I've harvested a first tomato with a longer maturity. It took 130 days to harvest the first Copper River tomato. It was planted on May 5 of this year.

Harvested Over 7000 Back Yard Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 5 Big Bite, 3 Snow White(1), 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Delicious, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), SunGold, Ella's Pink Plum, Carmello, Purple Dog Creek, Neves Azorean Red, Aunt Ruby's German Green and Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red for a total of 23 tomatoes.

Ugh, it's hot again. Yesterday: 100.7 degrees.

We've now harvested over 7000 back yard tomatoes (7075)! Actually we passed the 7000 mark a couple of days ago. I noticed it yesterday and letting the world know about it now.

My wife watered the tomatoes in the containers.

Harvested Over 10,500 Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 13 Black Cherry(1), 7 Snow White(1), 5 Indigo Rose, 4 SunGold, 4 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 3 Japanese Black Trifele, 2 Oaxacan Jewel, 2 Carmello, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Amana Orange (6 ounces), 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Indigo Apple(2), German Orange Strawberry, Black Cherry(2), Marianna's Peace (7.5 ounces), Neves Azorean Red (6 ounces), Gypsy, Black From Tula, Big Bite, Yellow Perfection, Oaxacan Pink, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Red Currant, Marmara, Jaune Flamme(1) and Porkchop(1) for a total of 64 tomatoes.

I'm not sure why we harvested one less tomato than we did yesterday. Yesterday covered two days. I guess I didn't do as good a job of harvesting the ripe tomatoes toward in the "Far East", the far side of our back yard tomato plants.

My wife made sauce out of our harvested tomatoes, mixed it with Italian sausage and served it with ravioli. Good stuff!

We've now harvested over 10,500 tomatoes for the year (10529)! We're plugging along...

Harvested Over 100 Indigo Rose Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 21 Black Cherry(1), 16 SunGold, 14 Snow White(2), 11 Husky Cherry Red(1), 10 Husky Cherry Red(2), 9 Snow White(1), 7 SunSugar, 5 Yellow Perfection, 5 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 4 Indigo Apple(2), 4 Indigo Rose, 3 Carmello, 2 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Pink Furry Boar, 2 Nyagous(1), 2 Red Boar(2), 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Red Boar(1), 2 Ella's Pink Plum, 2 Dr. Wyche's Yellow, 2 Indigo Apple(1), Kellogg's Breakfast, Chinese Tea, Oaxacan Pink, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Sweet Million, Red Currant, Big Bite, Pineapple Pig, German Orange Strawberry (7.5 ounces), Japanese Black Trifele, Neves Azorean Red (15 ounces), Italian Heirloom (9 ounces), Amazon Chocolate, Noire Charbonneuse(2), Watermelon (7 ounces), Pineapple(2) (22 ounces), Gypsy, Marmara, Taxi and Tolstoi for a total of 147 tomatoes.

Yesterday's high: 103.2. It's still hot!

I noticed a flaw in the on line spreadsheet yesterday. The amount of harvested Neves Azorean Red was too high. I found the flaw and fixed it. The July numbers adjusted downward. The original reported amount of 6088 plummeted to...6068.

What a beautiful Pineapple(2)! I don't think I've pulled such a heavy tomato this late in the season. This tomato buried the pretty 15 ounce Neves Azorean Red, another good tomato.

We have more plants to pull.

I don't plan to harvest tomorrow.

We've now harvested over 850 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes (857), over 100 Indigo Rose tomatoes (101) and 50 Speckled Roman(3) tomatoes this year.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Harvested Over 700 Husky Cherry Red(2) Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 37 Black Cherry(1), 24 SunGold, 18 Husky Cherry Red(2), 12 Snow White(2), 8 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Snow White(1), 6 Sweet Million, 5 Nyagous(1), 5 SunSugar, 4 Black and Brown Boar(2), 3 Black Cherry(2), 3 Speckled Roman(3), 2 Jaune Flamme(2), 2 Sweet 100, 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Red Currant, 2 Neves Azorean Red (8.5 ounces), 2 Amazon Chocolate, Redfield Beauty, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Oaxacan Jewel (11 ounces), Crimson Cushion, Pineapple Pig, Yellow Furry Boar, Delicious, Omar's Lebanese (11 ounces), Ramapo, Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red and Porkchop(2) for a total of 154 tomatoes.

Yesterday's high: 105.8. It was particularly warm at night, making it difficult to sleep.

My wife made sauce out of some of the tomatoes but other than that, not much happened. It's been so hot that other house items have backed up.

We've now harvested over 500 front yard tomatoes this month. Also, we've harvested over 700 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes (715) and over 200 Snow White(2) tomatoes (205) this year.

Friday, August 10, 2012

Harvested Over 2300 SunGold Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 37 SunGold, 20 Snow White(1), 20 Snow White(2), 10 Husky Cherry Red(2), 10 Black Cherry(2), 9 Black Cherry(1), 6 SunSugar, 6 Redfield Beauty, 5 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 4 Husky Cherry Red(1), 3 Delicious (6 ounces), 3 Chinese Tea, 3 White Zebra, 2 Nyagous(1), 2 Pink Furry Boar, 2 Ella's Pink Plum, 2 Nebraska Wedding (6 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 2 Porkchop(2), 2 Speckled Roman(2), 2 Pineapple Pig (7 ounces), 2 Red Boar(1), 2 Earl of Edgecombe, 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Sweet Million, 2 Ramapo (9.5 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Vorlon (6 ounces, 9.5 ounces), Porkchop(1) (6 ounces), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Sweet Baby Girl, Sweet 100, Red Currant, Yellow Perfection, Oaxacan Pink (7 ounces), Crimson Cushion, Yellow Furry Boar, Black and Brown Boar(2), Neves Azorean Red, Amazon Chocolate, Indigo Rose, Jaune Flamme(2) and Tolstoi for a total of 177 tomatoes.

There was no harvest on Thursday. Neither of us slept well. It got up to 107.2 on Wednesday and we didn't cool down the bedroom like we should have. My wife is ill and our bedroom was simply too hot for us to sleep well. I woke up before 5 in the morning, sweating. So I took care of a couple errands and went out for breakfast.

And yesterday it got up to 109.4 degrees. Yikes! But we cooled the room this time and the night was a tad cooler than the night before. We both slept well, certainly better than the night before.

But boy is it hot. Some of our plants are becoming bone dry. To be fair the plants will become bone dry anyway, just not so soon.

My wife pulled out Big Zebra yesterday and I believe she watered the pots the day before.

We've now harvested over 2300 SunGold tomatoes (2333), over 200 Snow White(1) tomatoes (213) and over 50 Chinese Tea tomatoes (51)!

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Harvested Pineapple(2) Tomato!

Today's harvest includes 24 SunGold, 13 Snow White(1), 8 Black Cherry(2), 7 Sweet Baby Girl, 6 Snow White(2), 5 Sweet Million, 5 Crimson Cushion, 4 Sweet 100, 4 Husky Cherry Red(2), 3 SunSugar, 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Big Zebra (12.5 ounces), 2 Noire Charbonneuse(2), 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Black and Brown Boar(2), 2 Neves Azorean Red, 2 Amazon Chocolate, 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Berkeley Tie Dye, 2 Earl of Edgecombe, 2 German Orange Strawberry, Pineapple(2) (14 ounces) (new), Speckled Roman(1), White Zebra, Black and Brown Boar(1), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Pineapple(1) (8 ounces), Brad's Black Heart (6 ounces), Pink Furry Boar, Oaxacan Pink, Husky Cherry Red(1), Nebraska Wedding (8 ounces), Garden Peach, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Marmara, Taxi, Indigo Rose, Jaune Flamme(2) and Porkchop(2) for a total of 125 tomatoes.

The harvested Pineapple(2) is a beauty! This is a grafted tomato, a birthday gift from our friend Allison.

Copper River has a growing tomato! I was looking for possible tomato plants to pull and I'll be darned it has a growing tomato!

I hope it can survive the heat. Yesterday it got up to 108.1 degrees at Pierce College!

My wife watered the front yard tomatoes in the morning after pulling out Chile Verde.

We've now harvested 800 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes and over 100 Black Cherry(2) tomatoes (107).
