Pulled 12 Tomato Plants

Saturday's harvest includes 5 Sunchocola, 5 Matt's Wild Cherry, 5 Husky Cherry Red(2), 4 Sugar Snack, 3 Bloody Butcher, 3 SunGold, 2 Purple Bumble Bee, 2 Green Grape, 2 Michael Pollan, Blue Gold, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), Speckled Roman(2), Indigo Rose, Evan's Purple Pear and Husky Cherry Red(1) for a total of 37 tomatoes.

The Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) and Blue Gold tomatoes were nice, the rest were unremarkable.

After the harvest I pulled out a lot of tomato plants. The pulled plants include Bloody Butcher, Indigo Apple, Yellow Perfection, Orange Paruche, Hungarian Heart, Indigo Rose, Jaune Flamme, Snow White, Nyagous, Cherokee Purple, Garden Peach(1) and Japanese Black Trifele, 12 in all. A few of these still had tomatoes to ripen but I simply wasn't interested in the final product. I would have pulled Captain Lucky as well, but the cage is supporting a leaning Michael Pollan so I left it alone.

No milestones today. 

Front Yard Plants Are Burned Out

Today's harvest includes 5 Matt's Wild Cherry, 4 Sugar Snack, 3 Sunchocola, 3 Indigo Rose, 2 Bloody Butcher, 2 Orange Paruche, 2 SunGold, 2 Green Grape, 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), 2 Michael Pollan, Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, Porkchop(1), Bread and Salt, Volunteer(4), Speckled Roman(2), Jaune Flamme, Nyagous, Garden Peach(1), Aunt Ruby's German Green and Husky Cherry Red(1) for a total of 37 tomatoes.

Remember back in mid to late June I was commenting on how tall and beautiful the front yard tomato plants were? It was like they were three weeks ahead of normal.

I tend to pull a lot of plants around Labor Day...but it looks like this year I'll be pulling out a lot of plants right about this weekend. They are burned out. The only one that looks like will get a second wind is Sunchocola.

Outside of Porkchop(1) the rest of the harvest was unremarkable.

No milestones hit today, but we should hit a couple milestones tomorrow. 

Harvested Over 900 Sunchocola Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 10 Matt's Wild Cherry, 10 Husky Cherry Red(2), 8 Orange Paruche, 8 SunGold, 7 Volunteer(4), 7 Black Cherry, 5 Bread and Salt (6.5 ounces, 6.5 ounces, 7.5 ounces), 4 Sunchocola, 4 Indigo Rose, 4 Stupice, 4 Sugar Snack, 4 Michael Pollan, 3 Bloody Butcher, 3 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 3 Pineapple, 3 Green Grape, 2 German Orange Strawberry (6 ounces), 2 Jaune Flamme, 2 Nyagous, 2 Evan's Purple Pear, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Porkchop(1), Yellow Perfection, Adriana's Grande, Speckled Roman(2), Black Icicle, Cherokee Purple and "Green Zebra" (not Green Zebra) for a total of 104 tomatoes.

In what alternate universe does Bread and Salt have a higher harvest total than Sunchocola? Bread and Salt keeps cranking them out -- it's making a believer out of me.

I was less aggressive with today's harvest. I didn't have the right clothes and shoes for the job and didn't "dig in" like I normally do. Because of the wrong garb I didn't pull out any tomato plants. Still, the numbers look all right.

I know I need to report on how Purple Bumble Bee tastes. But all of the Purple Bumble Bee tomatoes have been given away to others.

We've now harvested over 500 back yard tomatoes this month (503). What's a little more interesting is that the back yard harvest number is now essentially even with the front yard harvest numbers (2604 back yard, 2608 front yard). When I was harvesting nearly around 100 combined Sunchocola and Orange Paruche tomatoes a month ago there was no way to anticipate the back yard catching up. But the back yard will pass up the front yard tomorrow.

We've now harvested over 900 Sunchocola tomatoes (902) this year, over 450 SunGold tomatoes this year (456) and over 150 Husky Cherry Red tomatoes this year (157)! 

Harvested Over 3000 Tomatoes This Year!

Saturday's harvest includes 47 Orange Paruche, 42 Sunchocola, 26 Matt's Wild Cherry, 17 SunGold, 10 Garden Peach(2), 7 Garden Peach(1), 7 Husky Cherry Red(1), 7 Husky Cherry Red(2), 6 Jaune Flamme, 4 Bloody Butcher, 4 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 4 Yellow Perfection, 4 Speckled Roman(2), 4 Indigo Rose, 4 Garden Peach(3), 4 Sugar Snack, 3 German Orange Strawberry (9 ounces, 13 ounces), 3 Earliana, 3 Snow White, 3 Evan's Purple Pear, 3 Black Cherry, 2 Hungarian Heart (8 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 2 Adriana's Grande, Indigo Apple, Earl of Edgcombe, Berkeley Tie Dye, Pineapple, Odoriko and Golden Rave for a total of 222 tomatoes.

And again, today is the high harvest amounts for both the front and back yards (114 and 108 respectively) so this is the highest harvest amount for the year.

Today's German Orange Strawberry tomatoes look really nice (again).

My wife and her cousin spent most of Friday preparing for our tomato party this afternoon. I helped out a little bit last night. We hope the party goes well but one never knows until it happens... We've prepared cherry tomatoes stuffed with goat cheese, salsa from our tomatoes, pasta with sauce from our tomatoes, someone is bringing gazpacho and other items.

Berkeley Tie Dye and Earliana are ready to be pulled but I'm not sure when we'll get around to it...The harvested tomatoes we're getting from these plants are tiny and unpalatable.

We've now harvested over 3000 tomatoes this year (3146), over 1000 back yard tomatoes in July (1004) and over 200 Matt's Wild Cherry (224) this year! 

Harvested Blue Beauty!

Today's harvest includes 52 Sunchocola, 41 Orange Paruche, 16 Matt's Wild Cherry, 12 SunGold, 5 Black Cherry, 4 Bloody Butcher, 4 Garden Peach(2), 4 Garden Peach(3), 4 Sugar Snack, 3 Earliana, 3 Jaune Flamme, 2 German Orange Strawberry (12.5 ounces), 2 Hungarian Heart, 2 Pineapple (6 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Snow White, Blue Beauty (new, 11.5 ounces), Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, Yellow Perfection, Berkeley Tie Dye, Bread and Salt, Ananas Noire (8 ounces), Speckled Roman(2), Garden Peach(1), Husky Cherry Red(1) and Husky Cherry Red(2) for a total of 168 tomatoes.

I'm not sure this image does this tomato justice. The burnt orange color on the underside is more vibrant than shown. The contrast with the blue streaking at the shoulders is striking.

We had our largest front yard total today (108). The Thursday sprinklers went off as planned but I didn't try to beat them this time. I harvested the front yard first, leaving the wet back yard for last. I'm sure I didn't hunt for tomatoes as diligently as I normally do (note the lack of Evan's Purple Pear today) as everything was wet.

A Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) is maturing.

We've now harvested over 2000 tomatoes in July (2055)! 

Harvested Black Icicle!

Today's harvest includes 48 Orange Paruche, 36 Sunchocola, 20 SunGold, 16 Matt's Wild Cherry, 8 Garden Peach(2), 7 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Black Cherry, 6 Sugar Snack, 4 Earliana, 4 Nyagous, 4 Garden Peach(3), 3 Jaune Flamme, 2 Black Icicle (new), 2 Bloody Butcher, 2 Indigo Apple, 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Adriana's Grande (6 ounces, 7.5 ounces), 2 Pineapple (7 ounces, 6 ounces), 2 Speckled Roman(2), 2 Indigo Rose, Berkeley Tie Dye, German Orange Strawberry, Ananas Noire (10.5 ounces), Snow White, Evan's Purple Pear, Green Grape and Michael Pollan for a total of 185 tomatoes.

We have a couple of nice Black Icicle tomatoes today. These were a surprise. Not that I didn't have mature Black Icicle tomatoes, it's just that these tomatoes didn't have blossom end rot. I've probably thrown away 20 of these tomatoes before getting these two flawless tomatoes.

Today's harvest is our highest this year so far. The front yard amount (98) ties the July 3 front yard harvest amount, while the back yard amount (87) is the largest amount so far this year. 10 days ago we harvested 21 from the back yard, today 87. That's where the higher numbers are coming from.

I watered the back yard tomato plants in the ground. My wife indicated that she gets to the ones in the raised bed and in the container plants. I added fertilizer to them last night and they'll be watered in some time in the future.

Ananas Noire and Adriana's Grande continue to impress.

A Blue Beauty is maturing. And true to the name, it's a beauty. I may supply an image once I harvest it.

We've now harvested over 2500 tomatoes for the year (2542), over 800 Orange Paruche tomatoes for the year (820), over 500 Sunchocola tomatoes for the year (535) and over 100 Sugar Snack tomatoes for the year (102)! 

Harvested Indigo Apple and Earl of Edgecombe!

Today's harvest includes 47 Orange Paruche, 37 Sunchocola, 7 Earliana, 4 SunGold, 2 Stupice, 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), Indigo Apple (new), Earl of Edgecombe (new), Bloody Butcher, Yellow Perfection, Adriana's Grande (13 ounces), Janet's Jacinthe Jewel, Bread and Salt (10 ounces), Snow White, Garden Peach(2), Husky Cherry Red(1) and Garden Peach(3) for a total of 110 tomatoes.

The ripe Indigo Apple was a pleasant surprise. I hadn't noticed the orange blush on the tomato before. The ripe Earl of Edgecombe wasn't a surprise -- I forgot to mention it in yesterday's blog post -- but the first one harvested was a bit of a surprise. The one I spotted is still a day or two away. The one I harvested today isn't very big but it is a beautiful bright orange tomato.

Speaking of yesterday's blog post, I didn't post the weights correctly. Bread and Salt was originally posted as 9 ounces but it was really 12 ounces. Adriana's Grande had no weight posted but it came in at 13.5 ounces. Yesterday's blog post has been updated with these values. I'm sure this is riveting information for the reader!

I got up early again to finish the watering. First I harvested the front yard tomatoes. This took some extra time simply due to the amount harvested. Side note: Yesterday was our high harvest day for the year at 91 tomatoes. Today we harvested 98 tomatoes in the front yard alone. Anyway, then I realized the sprinklers are due to go off in the back yard at 6:22 AM and it's now 6:17. Harvest the back yard as fast as you can! Which I did, of course, but I'm sure to have missed a few.

After the back yard harvest I double watered the "koi pond". Vorlon is ready to be pulled and the "moat" for Berkeley Tie Dye leaks badly on the west side. I noticed a hidden Adriana's Grande during this watering. It should have been picked yesterday. To my defense it was pretty well hidden in the canopy created by the leaves, other fruit and branches.

We've now harvested over 200 Sunchocola tomatoes (208) this year. 

Harvested Snow White!

Today's harvest includes 32 Orange Paruche, 24 Sunchocola, 7 SunGold, 3 Sugar Snack, 3 Earliana, 2 Snow White (new), 2 Bloody Butcher, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Yellow Perfection, Janet's Jacinthe Jewel, Bread and Salt (9 ounces), Hungarian Heart, Husky Cherry Red(2), Garden Peach(2) and Green Grape for a total of 82 tomatoes.

I spent a fair amount of time last night taping the larger tomato plants. Adriana's Grande, Sunchocola, Hungarian Heart, German Orange Strawberry, Orange Paruche, Garden Peach(2) and a few others got the tomato taping treatment. I added another stake to Garden Peach(2).

I have some concern that Sunchocola may fall over. The plant is in a large, strong cage. But as I harvest the lower hanging fruit, the plant has become somewhat more imbalanced. The plant will "shift" depending on how I readjust the plant. It's not so much getting tall as the top of the plant is getting wide and flowing everywhere. Think a top heavy ice cream cone. If I stake it it'll need about three stakes outside the cage to trap the cage in place.

Both my wife and I agree that we don't get the Cola taste from our Sunchocola, but we love the tomato. When we tried it at the tomato tasting party last year Loteria Grill, we could taste the Cola undertones. But it's a prolific, pretty and tasty tomato for us.

The German Orange Strawberry plant is amazing. It's now about 7 and a half feet tall and growing like a cyprus tree. Sooner or later I'll have problems with the plant but for now it's perfectly behaved. No maturing fruit yet.

Speaking of which, the two Persimmon plantings (not Persimmon) have maturing tomatoes. And it looks like an Ananas Noire is just starting to mature, but is probably a week away. 

Harvested Four New Tomatoes!

There was no harvest Sunday. We were out of town in the morning but came back home in the early evening.

My wife double watered the "corner office" while I watered the container plants near the south gate and about eight more plants in the back yard. I had single watered the ones in the ground. I did a little bit of training during this watering. I noted that Snow White and Volunteer(4) has maturing tomatoes. Great White has growing tomatoes.

Volunteer(4) is not another Garden Peach. The tomatoes are small and red.

I had a Bread and Salt tomato as part of dinner. The tomato did taste quite good though it was a tad overripe. It's hard to single out the flavor, though, short of "good".

Today's harvest includes 27 Orange Paruche, 24 Sunchocola, 14 Matt's Wild Cherry, 11 SunGold, 4 Green Grape (new), 4 Bread and Salt (10.5 ounces, 7 ounces, 9 ounces), 4 Sugar Snack, 3 Bloody Butcher (new), 3 Stupice, 3 Garden Peach(3), 2 Volunteer(4) (new), 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Earliana, Vorlon, Adriana's Grande (13 ounces), Jaune Flamme, Pierce's Pride (new), Garden Peach(2) and Husky Cherry Red(2) for a total of 108 tomatoes.

We harvested from 4 new plants today! Bloody Butcher and Volunteer(4) was expected. Green Grape was a complete surprise. I had knelt down to look at the two Husky Cherry Red tomatoes when I noticed a green tomato off the vine. After completing the Husky Cherry Red harvesting I went back to the fallen tomato. Turns out it was ripe! I looked at Green Grape and saw other ripe tomatoes. I harvested two more. During the harvesting another ripe one fell to the ground. While Pierce's Pride wasn't unexpected, it's a small "stress" tomato. The plant is turning white and not growing. Any ripe tomato will be stressed and for the most part inedible.

Today's harvest number is obviously bloated due to the lack of a Sunday harvest.

Volunteer(4) looks like Matt's Wild Cherry but I haven't tasted it to verify. For now it remains labeled as Volunteer(4).

The 13 ounce Adrian's Grande is a beauty. 

Harvested Two Volunteers!

Saturday's harvest includes 17 Orange Paruche, 13 Sunchocola, 4 SunGold, 3 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 3 Earliana, 3 Bread and Salt (8 ounces, 12.5 ounces), 3 Matt's Wild Cherry, 2 Garden Peach(1) (new), 2 Garden Peach(2), Garden Peach(3) (new), Stupice, Odoriko, Husky Cherry Red(1), Husky Cherry Red(2) and Sugar Snack for a total of 56 tomatoes.

I noticed Volunteer(1) had tomatoes ready to harvest in the morning and obviously picked a couple of them. They looked and felt exactly like Volunteer(2) (which was renamed Garden Peach). I took note that Volunteer(3) had maturing tomatoes that were yellow and could be another Garden Peach tomato plant.

In the evening I told my wife the good news that we have a second and potentially a third Garden Peach plant. She verified that the two harvested tomatoes were Garden Peach tomatoes. I took her out Volunteer(3) and showed her the maturing tomato. She said it was ready so we harvested it. It felt and looked like another Garden Peach!

So I've adjusted the names of these plants on the online spreadsheet. Volunteer(1) becomes Garden Peach(1), Volunteer(2) became Garden Peach and is now Garden Peach(2) and Volunteer(3) becomes Garden Peach(3).

All of these Garden Peach tomatoes appear to be undersized, though healthy and "unstressed". For the most part their size is around nickel to quarter size. Garden Peach tomatoes are usually (at least for us) golf ball sized or larger. My guess is that these plants are doing great with the soil in the raised bed but once the roots hit the dirt below, the roots begin to struggle finding both nutrition and places to expand. In other words, the dirt below the raised bed isn't all that great.

I noted that Bloody Butcher had maturing tomatoes. 

Six More Plants With Growing Tomatoes

I did a fair amount of tomato training on Saturday. Also, I added cages to the three container plants near the south gate.

I looked over the tomatoes and found a few more plants with tomatoes. In the "corner office", Bloody Butcher and Indigo Apple had tiny tomatoes. In the "koi pond", Vorlon had a very tiny tomato.

Among the raised beds in the back yard, Volunteer(1) and Husky Cherry Red(1) have growing tomatoes. In the ground within the back yard, Persimmon(1) (not Persimmon) -- the south plant of the two plants -- has a growing tomato. I think there were others but it's too warm at the moment to back check.

Orange Paruche has stiff branches that are hard to train. I've already broken a couple of branches off of this plant. The tomatoes on Bread and Salt are growing rapidly.

Stupice has about a half dozen tomatoes ripening. We should have ripe tomatoes before the end of the month! 

More Plantings...

On Thursday we planted Speckled Roman(2) and Dark Galaxy in the cleared out area that I had said earlier we wouldn't plant in this year (ha ha). We planted Green Grape and Husky Cherry Red(1) in the fourth raised bed.

On Saturday (after working TomatoMania in Fillmore) we planted Bloody Butcher, Indigo Apple and Indian Stripe in the "corner office". However, something whacked Dark Galaxy overnight and it doesn't look very healthy. We'll monitor this closely and replace with a different seedling if it doesn't recover.

Today my wife planted Speckled Roman(1), Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red and Porkchop in the "corner office". Dark Galaxy looks the same...

Pulling out the grass and digging the holes for the new area was a chore. We're only about halfway through pulling out the grass but it did create enough room to plant the two tomatoes mentioned above. I pulled out about three gallons of rocks and asphalt before planting Speckled Roman(2) and over two gallons planting Dark Galaxy. These "virgin" areas have a lot of asphalt.

Almost all of the other tomato plants have taken off and look great. 

Cages In The Ground; Now Up To 92 Tomatoes

We've spent parts of the last three days putting up all of our tomato cages. We now have all of them supporting our seedlings. We need to purchase about 10 more or so.

On Friday my wife watered the front yard tomatoes and the container plants in the back yard.

Today we visited the L. A. Arboretum show in Arcadia, I believe. TomatoMania had a booth there and we picked up Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red and Copper River.

When we got back home we pulled out Bloody Butcher and replaced it with Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red. We had an extra large pulp pot, so we prepared some soil, placed it in this pot and planted Copper River there. So now we're up to 92 tomatoes!

My wife also clipped a few more lower lying tomato branches. She noticed that a couple of the tomato plants had black spots on their leaves. And Big Zebra has some leaf curl. Which reminds me of one of the indicators of a bad year I forgot to add: There was a late cold snap in mid-March. A late winter cold snap is not good for tomato seedlings. We may already be seeing some of this damage. 

We've Planted 91 Seedlings This Year!

I finished with the inventory yesterday evening and started work on the on-line tomato spreadsheet during the night. We've verified planting 91 seedlings this year.

However, I missed a planting on this blog. Italian Heirloom was planted last Saturday.

Bloody Butcher may be replaced with a healthier seedling.

Some of the tomato plants are getting tall enough to get a bit of a lean. They need cages! 

How Does It Look For This Year?

Now that we're all the tomato seedlings are planted for the year (famous last words), how do I think they will do this year?

Here's some bullets that will indicate we will have a really good year:

1) Look back on our February 20 post of this year. Some of that compostible dirt was placed on our yellowing back yard grass, for lack of any other place to put it. The grass is completely green. A big heaping pile was placed in the "koi pond". Last year we didn't add soil and the soil level had noticeably dropped an inch or so.

There was so much soil we placed it everywhere, including the plantable area of back yard.

2) Based on the great results last year in the "Far East", I continued to dig deep holes there and in the backyard cutout. As a rough estimate, we pulled out about 350 pounds of rock and asphalt over the last five weeks or so from these two areas.

3) The plants look great. The only plant that looks like it may be struggling is Bloody Butcher.

4) The sweet peas and snap peas planted in the "koi pond" this last winter will add needed nitrogen to the soil.

And some bullets that indicate we'll have a mediocre year:

1) Sure we dug some deep holes in the back yard, but it took extra time. The seedlings got huge in their containers. Could they be root bound? Some plants looked to be at least 18 inches tall. That can't be good. Granted, all these seedlings are four to six inches above ground when planted, but we think planting tall seedlings isn't as "safe" as planting smaller seedlings.

2) Some of the larger seedlings had black spots on their leaves. One long seedling had a black bruising in the middle of the stem.

3) Lots of beefsteaks were planted somewhat late. If we hit 110 degrees in late June (like 2008) or early July, the flowers will sterilize and we'll end up with little to no harvest on these plants with longer maturation cycles.

The seedlings look great...but we say that every year. But they really do look great! We think the compostible dirt has really helped the garden overall. Not just the tomato seedlings but the back yard grass, the irises, roses, etc..

I suspect our count for the year won't be that high. As mentioned, we planted a lot of larger tomatoes this year. From memory: Giant Syrian, Omar's Lebanese, Big Zebra, Delicious, Big Bite, Amana Orange and Pineapple are a few of the plants that can produce tomatoes over one pound. We got over 2700 tomatoes from Matt's Wild Cherry last year in the "koi pond", but this year we planted it in a pot. We won't get 2700 tomatoes from this plant this year.

My guess: We're more dependent on the weather this year than on other years. I'm going to guess a total of 7000 tomatoes harvested this year. But we will harvest more pounds than last year.

I'm excited for this year's harvest! 

Planted Bloody Butcher and Ramapo

This evening I planted Bloody Butcher in the hole started yesterday. This plant had several tomatoes growing on it. Normally I recommend that tomaotes and buds be removed when transplanting into the ground. In essence this "resets" the plant to focus on root growing. But this plant had a nearly one inch tomato, a half inch tomato and three other tiny tomatoes growing. The nearly one inch tomato convinced me that the plant wouldn't fully "reset" and just go with what I got. But I planted it a bit too deep. Hopefully the plant takes root and grows, at which point we can add soil to the base.

I made another hole in the "Far East" about two and a half feet away. I was still pulling out rocks and asphalt (you know the story, repeated it many times), but this time I decided the hole was deep enough to plant Ramapo. But I know there's rocks and debris below where I stopped. I did a better planting job on this one.

I know it's good for the garden to pull out all the rocks, bricks and asphalt but it will take years and years and years to see the results. 

Harvested Over 4000 Front Yard Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 54 Matt's Wild Cherry, 13 Snow White, 8 SunGold(1), 7 SunSugar, 4 Quedlinburger Fruehe Liebe, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), SunGold(2), Sweet 100, Garden Peach, Orange And Green Zebra, Honkin' Big Black Cherry, Green Grape, Green Doctors Kiwi(2), Patio, Michael Pollan, Vorlon, Porkchop, Haley's Purple Comet and Bloody Butcher for a total of 103 tomatoes.

We've now harvested over 4000 front yard tomatoes (4033)! Granted, over half of the harvested front yard tomatoes are from one prodigious plant, Matt's Wild Cherry (2199).

Other numbers of note: We've now harvested over 700 Snow White tomatoes (702) and 200 Haley's Purple Comet tomatoes.

My wife watered some of the back yard tomatoes this morning.

Today's harvest includes 75 Matt's Wild Cherry, 19 Husky Cherry Red(2), 14 SunGold(1), 8 Haley's Purple Comet, 5 Husky Cherry Red(1), 5 Garden Peach, 5 Coyote (not Coyote), 4 Green Zebra(2) (not Green Zebra), 3 Crimson Cushion(2) (6.5 ounces), 3 Sweet 100, 3 Persimmon (9 ounces, 12.5 ounces, 8 ounces), 2 Snow White, 2 SunSugar, 2 Quedlinburger Fruehe Liebe, 2 Orange And Green Zebra, Speckled Roman (new) (not Speckled Roman), Green Zebra(1), Bloody Butcher, Golden Mama, Pineapple, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Black Krim(1), Cassidy's Folly, Green Grape, Stupice and Oaxacan Jewel(2) for a total of 163 tomatoes.

Well, we harvested Speckled Roman...but it's not Speckled Roman. It's orange. The shape can pass for a Speckled Roman -- perhaps it's Banana Legs -- but it sure looks like the Persimmon we grow, named by the Tomato Lady of Beverly Hills. Strange. Looking on the Internet, Banana Legs is clearly yellow but the tomato I picked is orange in color. Whatever it is, it's not Speckled Roman.

We've now harvested over 6000 tomatoes for the year (6064)! And we've now harvested over 1000 tomatoes in the front yard for August. Based on the strength of the Matt's Wild Cherry harvest, our August numbers could be the best we've ever had. Stay tuned.

Harvested Yellow Brandywine!

Well, so much for Matt's Wild Cherry topping out. Today's harvest total was bigger than yesterday's, though by total poundage yesterday's was clearly greater than today.

Today was the first RockfordFest down at Paradise Cove. I spent all day looking at old Firebirds and hanging at Paradise Cove. Several behind the scenes people came and spoke highly of James Garner and the show's atmosphere. My wife and I brought tomatoes from yesterday's and today's harvest which were liked by all.

Harvested Porkchop and Portuguese Neighbor!

Today's harvest includes 18 SunSugar, 13 Matt's Wild Cherry, 9 Husky Cherry Red(2), 7 Bloody Butcher, 6 SunGold(1), 4 Husky Cherry Red(1), 4 Green Grape, 3 Vorlon (8 ounces), 3 Quedlinburger Fruehe Liebe, 3 Haley's Purple Comet, 2 Honkin' Big Black Cherry, 2 Golden Mama, 2 Jaune Flamme, 2 Lime Green Salad, 2 Stupice, 2 Sweet Carneros Pink, 2 Black And Brown Boar, Porkchop (9 ounces) (new), Portuguese Neighbor (15 ounces) (new), Australian Giant Oxheart (13 ounces) Paul Robeson(1), Volunteer(1), Green Doctor's Kiwi(2), Kellogg's Breakfast, Black Seaman(2) (6 ounces) and Garden Peach for a total of 93 tomatoes.

Porkchop was a bit of a surprise. It's a beautifully brightly striped yellow tomato. If it tastes as good as it looks it will taste fantastic. I can't wait!

The harvested Portuguese Neighbor nearly weighed a pound. It's colored pink. I may have picked it a day early.

Side note: Green Doctor's Kiwi(1) isn't a Green Doctor's Kiwi. The tomatoes are too big. None of the tomatoes have matured so we're not sure what it is at this point.

A German Orange Strawberry is maturing.
