Harvested Over 9500 Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 16 Black Cherry(1), 15 SunGold, 7 Husky Cherry Red(1), 5 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 5 Snow White(2), 4 Red Currant, 4 Snow White(1), 3 Redfield Beauty, 3 Pineapple Pig, 3 Indigo Apple(2), 3 Yellow Perfection, 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Oaxacan Pink (6 ounces), 2 SunSugar, 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Ella's Pink Plum, Nyagous(1), Husky Cherry Red(2), Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Big Bite, Pink Furry Boar, Carmello, Nebraska Wedding (8.5 ounces), German Orange Strawberry (7 ounces), Delicious, Amazon Chocolate, Black Cherry(2), Taxi, Gypsy, Red Boar(2) and Jaune Flamme(2) for a total of 93 tomatoes.

I forgot to mention that we tried one of our large Pineapple(2) tomatoes for dinner on Saturday. Our verdict: mixed. The flavor wasn't there. It wasn't a bad flavor, just little to no flavor. The tomato itself was quite good -- firm where you wanted it to be, and soft where you wanted it to be. Just very little flavor.

Yesterday's high: 100.2. We didn't do much all day and the tomatoes were left to bake some more...

This morning I noticed a lot of new growth on SunGold. I'm expecting the weather to break in the near future, allowing the new blooms to germinate. Then SunGold will get a second wave a few weeks later. It's already a safe bet that we'll break our all time high of 2727 Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes harvested in a year. It's a little early to predict over 3000 but based on the new growth during this blistering heat, but that's what I predict.

We've now harvested over 9500 tomatoes for the year (9517) and over 2500 tomatoes for the month of August (2585). It looks like we'll reach 10,000 tomatoes this month.

Also, we've harvested 300 Snow White(1) tomatoes, over 100 Redfield Beauty tomatoes (102), over 50 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red tomatoes (54) and over 50 Dr. Wyche's Yellow tomatoes (51) this year. 

Harvested Pineapple(2) Tomato!

The harvested Pineapple(2) is a beauty! This is a grafted tomato, a birthday gift from our friend Allison.

Copper River has a growing tomato! I was looking for possible tomato plants to pull and I'll be darned it has a growing tomato!

I hope it can survive the heat. Yesterday it got up to 108.1 degrees at Pierce College!

My wife watered the front yard tomatoes in the morning after pulling out Chile Verde.

We've now harvested 800 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes and over 100 Black Cherry(2) tomatoes (107).

I'm a little surprised that the numbers have stayed as solid for this long. SunGold is finally starting to fade but the two Black Cherry and the two Snow White plants have picked up the slack.

The tomato sizes are starting to dwindle and the plants are looking ragged. Noire Charbonneuse(1), Chinese Tea and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) may not last much longer. However, many plants will have a second wind. Sweet Baby Girl already has a second wind and has maturing tomatoes again.

I realized yesterday afternoon that I had missed the second to back row in the back yard cutout. I made it a point to go there today and found some good Amazon Chocolate, Black Cherry(2) and Ramapo tomatoes.

My wife watered some of the front yard tomatoes yesterday.

After today's harvest I told my wife that Paul Robeson was done. She pulled it out about 20 minutes later.

Other than that, Black Cherry and Snow White are keeping our numbers high. We like both tomatoes, so this is great!

A Big Zebra tomato is maturing. And I need to take a look at Neves Azorean Red, I don't know what the heck is happening with that plant. I know we haven't harvested anything for this one.

We've harvested over 200 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (220) and 100 Garden Peach tomatoes. Also, we've now harvested over 2000 front yard tomatoes in July and over 5500 tomatoes for 2012 (5739).

Well, there's good news: I think I figured out what's eating some of our tomatoes. There's bad news: I think I figured out what's eating some of our tomatoes. While harvesting in the back yard, a rat was walking across our north cinder block wall.

Technically I didn't complete the harvest. I left the last row of the back yard in the interest of time.

My wife spent almost all day processing tomatoes in various forms. This morning she took all the smaller tomatoes, added oil and began to roast them in the oven.

Maturing tomatoes include Paul Robeson and Omar's Lebanese. I know there are others.

Is Nyagous(2) another Speckled Roman? There are similarities...

Today's Pineapple Pig harvest looks great.

Wow what a harvest! It's not the amount, it's the size of the tomatoes. My wife took an image of the harvest.

Lower left -- the five Crimson Cushion tomatoes. Behind it, Watermelon. The dark tomato in the front is Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2). The two tomatoes between Watermelon, Crimson Cushion and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) are Giant Syrian. Just to the right of Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) is Indigo Apple(2). Behind Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) and Indigo Apple(2) are 5 Speckled Roman(2) tomatoes. The large yellow/pink tomato is Oaxacan Jewel. To the right of Oaxacan Jewel are two orange tomatoes -- Dr. Wyche's Yellow. Behind Dr. Wyches' Yellow are two dark tomatoes -- Black From Tula.

My wife watered the container plants yesterday. Also, she spent four hours canning tomatoes.

Last night my wife and I sampled a few tomatoes. These included Taxi, Black and Brown Boar(2), Indigo Rose and Speckled Roman(2). My wife loved Taxi a lot. I liked it a lot as well. We both were amazed at Black and Brown Boar(2). Good looking exterior, good looking interior and a juicy, fresh taste. I remembered this from last year and I was only so-so at best regarding the flavor. This tomato was so delicious, so unlike what I remember that I'm left to believe I'm thinking of a different tomato. Indigo Rose is oddly refreshing. It's odd in that I've never run across a dark skinned tomato with a refreshing taste. My wife says it's because of the pink interior. We like it, it's good. Speckled Roman(2) was good but not great. That was due to the tomato being a day or two past prime maturity. It's not the fault of the tomato, we waited a bit too late. Still, it was quite good -- the meaty flavor still came through.

Here's a picture of Indigo Rose sliced in half. Does this remind you of a plum?

Indigo Apple(2) and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) were both surprises. I didn't know these plants had ripening tomatoes. The Green Zebra may be the only tomato we harvest off of this plant. The plant is obviously diseased. Oaxacan Jewel and Watermelon both look beautiful!

Plants with maturing tomatoes include Nyagous(2), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken and Pineapple Pig. But Nyagous(2) clearly isn't a Nyagous. Until we can truly identify it, Nyagous(2) it is.

We've now harvested over 1000 tomatoes from the back yard this year (1025). 

Harvested Taxi!

Today's harvest includes 23 SunGold, 14 Husky Cherry Red(1), 9 Husky Cherry Red(2), 4 Matt's Wild Cherry, 4 Yellow Currant, 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Carmello, 2 Ella's Pink Plum, 2 Red Currant, 2 SunSugar, 2 Green Grape, Taxi (new), Indigo Rose, Redfield Beauty, Speckled Roman(2), Sweet Baby Girl, Sweet Million and Sweet 100 for a total of 73 tomatoes.

I was a little hesitant to try Indigo Rose but my wife wanted to try it right away. I thought we should wait a day or two. I was wrong. It was ready. My wife tried it first. "Perfect" (As in it's ready to eat right now and it tastes really good). I tried it, liked it and would grow it again. I'll have to try it again to give a better description of the taste short of it tasted good. The interior of the tomato is unique. There's not a formal separation between the outer walls and the interior -- like a plum in a way. I'll have to take a picture of this tomato cut in half. The picture will show what I'm saying better than I can put it into words. Two thumbs up!

Our Husky Cherry Red tomatoes are really good this year.

Today's Redfield Beauty is overripe and has a large flaw with it. I suspect it will get thrown out.

We didn't do anything with the tomato plants yesterday. This morning I put fertilizer in all the container plants.

We've now harvested over 200 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes (202)! And we've harvested over 1000 tomatoes for the year (1004)! 

Harvested (and Tossed) Yellow Furry Boar!

Yesterday's harvest includes 18 SunGold, 15 Husky Cherry Red(1), 11 Husky Cherry Red(2), 10 Sweet Baby Girl, 10 Sweet 100, 4 Nyagous(1), 4 Black Cherry(1), 3 Sweet Million, 3 SunSugar, 2 Matt's Wild Cherry, 2 Red Currant, 2 Yellow Perfection, Yellow Furry Boar (new) for a total of 85 tomatoes.

Today's harvest includes 23 SunGold, 17 Husky Cherry Red(2), 16 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Sweet 100, 4 Nyagous(1), 4 Matt's Wild Cherry, 4 Yellow Currant, 4 SunSugar, 3 Sweet Baby Girl, 2 Sweet Million, 2 Red Currant, 2 Black Cherry(1) and Crimson Cushion for a total of 88 tomatoes.

I was going to post that Yellow Furry Boar was a bit of a surprise, but it was damaged (It looked like a bird had pecked it). I figured my wife wouldn't try to salvage it, though it was a possibility. She didn't. She tossed it. I still counted this one because it didn't prematurely mature do to malformation -- it's just the first tomato for that plant got hit by a bird's beak.

The Green Zebra plant appears to be diseased.

I did a fair amount of staking and taping yesterday evening. A fair amount of plants are leaning due to growing up out the top of the cage and getting top heavy. It's getting harder and harder to maneuver around some of these plants...

My wife watered the patio tomato plants yesterday.

Taxi, Creme Brulee and Jaune Flamme(2) have maturing tomatoes. I'm sure there are others. The maturing Dr. Wyche's Yellow is large.

We've now harvested over 200 SunGold (217) tomatoes. 

Swapping Cage Image

Eight More Plants With Tomatoes!

Today's harvest: Husky Cherry Red(1).

Yesterday evening I spent a lot of time training as many tomato plants as I could. I got a close look almost all the tomato plants. From that I discovered more plants with tomatoes.

A partial list includes Noire Charbonneuse(1), Oaxacan Jewel, Olga's Round Yellow Chicken, Garden Peach, Black Krim(2), Earl of Edgecombe, Jaune Flamme(2) and Black and Brown Boar(1).

Today my wife and I made six more cages from concrete reinforcing wire. We replaced some of the weaker cages with the new tomato cages. We took out the weaker cages. There was some minor damage done when removing the cages but we believe it is not serious.

The weaker cages were mostly "leggy". We cut them down to size and used these cut down cages on the container plants. We replaced the original cages and again there was some minor damage. For instance, I knocked a tomato off of the Taxi tomato plant. 

Harvested More Husky Cherry Red(2) Tomatoes!

Friday's harvest: Husky Cherry Red(2).

My wife watered the back yard tomatoes. But it took 2 and a half hours to hand water. We're looking into drip systems and soaker hoses.

My wife also purchased an Aunt Ruby's German Green to replace Vorlon(2). In the evening I put in all the extensions to the Texas Cages -- some of our tomato plants are already getting large!

We were busy all day Saturday so nothing happened in the garden.

On Sunday I snipped off the lower stems in the front yard. Also, I spent a fair amount "training" the tomato plants. In the evening (just before the eclipse) we purchased green stakes for our cages.

We wanted to get more done on Sunday but it simply got too hot. It got up to 98 degrees.

What's left to do? Plant Aunt Ruby's German Green. Make about six more cages and install them. At that point -- finally!!! -- it's maintenance. Maintenance includes "training" the plants, staking them, fertilizing the containers and watering.

Several plants have growing tomatoes. These include Taxi, Giant Syrian, Thessaloniki and Black Cherry(1).

Today's harvest: Husky Cherry Red(2). 

3 Planted In Pots, One In The Ground, Five Holes Made

After work I had about 90 minutes of sunlight to make as many holes in the backyard soil as I could. I dug a bunch of holes underneath and next to the lemon tree -- six holes in all. I did hit some significant asphalt on the last hole.

Why the concern? It's our understanding that it will rain Tuesday evening. We wanted to get as many plants in the ground as possible before it rains.

My wife planted Taxi, SunSugar and Tolstoi in pots. She also planted Big Zebra in the first of the holes.

So only four more tonight, but we're prepped for five more tomorrow.

One thing I've noticed is a preponderance of larger tomatoes. We don't have too many cherry or "small" tomatoes. We have containers ready to accept seedlings, but we don't have the right seedlings that do reasonably well in them. 

My Orthodontist Gets Today's Harvest

It's hot again – yesterday got up to 102.6 at Pierce College.

I'll be giving today's harvest and part of yesterday's harvest to my orthodontist. I have an appointment later in the morning and they requested some of our tomatoes.

My wife watered the front yard tomato plants yesterday evening and the back yard tomato plants the day before.

We've now harvested over 1000 tomatoes for the month of August (1070)! Our harvest numbers for August has been consistent – 83/84/72/80/69/74/83/91/93/86/87/83/85. I expect the total to drop as SunGold's harvest numbers begin to fall.

We've also harvested over 3000 tomatoes in the front yard this year (3043).

Tasted Sara Black -- Not a Winner

My wife and I tried a beautiful looking 11 ounce Sara Black last night. It was somewhat disappointing. My wife liked it less than I did but there was no mistaking that this tomato “needed support”. The tomato didn't really stand on it's own.

The tomato itself looked beautiful, cut beautifully and was juicy and meaty. I thought the tomato was mellow but my wife described it as “soapy” – and not in a good way. I cleared my palate and took another bite and I can see where my wife is coming from. It doesn't taste bad, there's just not enough taste at all. Most of the taste comes from the texture of the tomato.

I give this tomato a soft thumbs down.

Still Below Normal Weather For July...

My wife watered the back yard tomato plants yesterday evening.

Two of the Orange Fleshed Purple Smudge tomatoes had a bit of a dark smudge on them!

The 22.5 ounce Large Pink Anna tomato is our heaviest tomato for 2010.

It only got up to 83 degrees yesterday. The low this morning was 51.6 degrees. Still more strangely cooler than normal July weather.

As mentioned previously, the plant labeled Azoychka isn't Azoychka. Looking on the TomatoFest site, it's the size of Grape and the shape of San Marzano. I'll keep looking. Also, I may have harvested them a bit early. We may sacrifice these two to see how ripe they get.

There were some pretty good sized tomatoes in today's batch. You can see some of them in the above image of today's harvest.

The harvest numbers for Violet Jasper has been pretty consistent but we're actually running out of tomatoes on this plant. The numbers will drop and in all probability it will get a second wind around a month later.

The birds continue to pick off two or three tomatoes a day. Today they got to a Japanese Black Trifele and I believe Nyagous.

Yesterday was a mellow day for all. The backyard was cleaned up in the evening and everything is pretty much back to normal.

Our weather is finally warming up! It got up to 95 degrees yesterday. This will help mature the tomatoes on the vine. It also sterilizes some of the flowers so they never become tomatoes so it's both good and bad. Today should be just as warm if not warmer.

The back yard Aunt Ruby's German Green finally has a tomato growing on it! There are two in the front yard. Aunt Ruby's German Green(1) has some good sized tomatoes growing on the vines. Aunt Ruby's German Green(2) is the same height (roughly 5 feet) and has one very small tomato growing in slow motion, if at all.

My wife watered some of the back yard tomatoes.

I need to stake several of the tomato plants.

Harvested Poma Amoris Minora Lutea and Carmelo!

There was no harvest done on Sunday and that's why today's numbers are so high. If you average this for two days the total would be 109 which would have been our highest harvest total to date.

We've now harvested over 1000 tomatoes for July and over 1500 for the year.

The birds got to Sara Black and one of the Japanese Black Trifeles still ripening on the vine.

Harvested Chile Verde!

Today's harvest includes 11 White Currant, 9 SunGold, 8 Violet Jasper, 6 Principe Borghese, 5 Yellow Perfection, 4 Speckled Roman, 4 Stupice, 3 Green Grape, 3 Black Krim (9.5 ounces, 10 ounces, 9 ounces), 3 Ananas Noire (9 ounces, 6.5 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 3 Nyagous, 3 Thessaloniki, 3 Red Grape, 2 Brown Berry, 2 Red Currant(1), 2 Babywine, 2 Black Cherry, 2 Husky Cherry Red, Patio, Red Currant(2), Sweet 100, Topaz, Taxi, Red Boar, Sweet Tangerine (6 ounces), Zapotec Pleated, Gajo de Melon and Chile Verde (new) for a total of 85 tomatoes weighing 6 pounds, 13 ounces.

Last night we had a barbeque at Liz and Ricardo's. It was a blast! The food and company was outstanding. The taste of the barbequed meat was out of this world delicious!

We brought a boatload of tomatoes to sample and they were a hit as well. We sampled Michael Pollan for the first time. Everyone liked it and the taste description that seemed the most accurate was “kiwi-like”. It reminded my wife of the taste of Lime Green Salad. German Orange Strawberry was a hit (“citrusy”), so was Speckled Roman (“meaty”) but the hit of the evening for me was Black Krim. My description of the taste of Black Krim is juicy and consistent with a velvety undertone. I think it's our best tomato taste so far this year.

In the afternoon I added a stake to Violet Jasper as the plant consistently leans westward. I put a stake on the west side to resist any more leaning in that direction. Also, I tried it again at the barbecue. The taste started out “cardboardy”, then started to become “tomatoey” (okay) but at the point the taste was becoming acceptable, the cardboard taste came back and dominated. I don't like the taste of this tomato.
