Pulled Out 18 Tomato Plants

There was no harvest on Saturday.

However, the gardeners came and pulled out plenty of tomato plants. The carnage included Sweet 100, Copper River, Big Bite, Carmello, Thessaloniki, Giant Syrian, German Orange Strawberry, Snow White(1), Black and Brown Boar(2), Purple Dog Creek, Delicious, Neves Azorean Red, Italian Heirloom, Amazon Chocolate, Amana Orange, Aunt Ruby's German Green, Watermelon and Pineapple(2) -- 18 plants in all. I might have kept one or two of those, but a vast majority were ready to go. We're left with 6 plants left but one of them was missed by the gardeners. We have 5 good ones remaining.

Both Husky Cherry Red tomato plants are still going even though they were planted in February. They're tough, rugged plants that take a licking and keep on ticking...

Yesterday got up to 101.9. The heat just will not let up for any appreciable period of time...

Today's harvest includes 4 Husky Cherry Red(2), SunGold and Husky Cherry Red(1) for a total of 6 tomatoes.

Harvested Over 1200 SunGold Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 108 SunGold, 32 Husky Cherry Red(1), 20 Husky Cherry Red(2), 11 Black Cherry(1), 10 Snow White(1), 8 Garden Peach, 6 Red Currant, 6 Carmello (6 ounces), 6 Yellow Perfection, 6 Black and Brown Boar(1) (6 ounces), 5 Indigo Apple(1), 5 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 5 Jaune Flamme(2), 5 Noire Charbonneuse(1), 4 Black Cherry(2), 4 Indigo Rose, 4 Yellow Currant, 4 Japanese Black Trifele (9 ounces), 3 Thessaloniki, 3 Brown Berry, 3 Green Grape, 3 Black Krim(2) (7 ounces, 7 ounces, 10 ounces), 3 Pink Furry Boar, 3 SunSugar, 3 Speckled Roman(2), 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) (10 ounces, 7 ounces), 2 Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg (7.5 ounces, 8 ounces), 2 Crimson Cushion, 2 Matt's Wild Cherry, 2 Marmara, 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Dr. Wyche's Yellow (15.5 ounces, 10 ounces), 2 Jaune Flamme(1), 2 Tolstoi, 2 Black Krim(1) (7 ounces, 6.5 ounces), Speckled Roman(1), Speckled Roman(3), Persimmon (19 ounces), Vorlon (14.5 ounces), Porkchop(1) (8 ounces), Sweet 100, Nebraska Wedding (9.5 ounces), Giant Syrian (11.5 ounces), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) (12 ounces), Italian Heirloom (7 ounces), Purple Dog Creek (11 ounces), Big Bite (6.5 ounces) and Indigo Apple(2) for a total of 303 tomatoes.

This is the first day in quite a while where I didn't harvest a new tomato. But tomorrow I'm almost certain to harvest a good sized Omar's Lebanese.

As you can tell, we are clearly in "high tide". But the "heaviest" day felt like it was two days ago. I suspect we had bigger tomatoes on Sunday.

Having said that, this harvest is remarkable. We've got some great tomatoes! Porkchop(1) looks great. So does Persimmon.

Note that throughout the "high tide", the SunGold/Husky Cherry Red harvest accounts for over half of the tomatoes. These plants aren't going to go forever...

My wife spent most of the day both processing and giving away tomatoes. She also pulled Green Zebra. I used the Green Zebra cage to prop up Black Cherry(1). I found a "school" of tomatoes in the doubled over "fold".

My wife also watered the front yard tomatoes.

Amana Orange is maturing. That was the yellow tomato I couldn't identify previously.

We've now harvested over 1200 SunGold tomatoes (1207). We've also harvested over 1500 tomatoes in the front yard this year (1555), 1500 back yard tomatoes in July (1596) and over 3500 tomatoes for the year (3749).

Harvested 5 New Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 53 SunGold, 18 Red Currant, 18 Husky Cherry Red(2), 12 Husky Cherry Red(1), 7 Carmello (7 ounces, 6 ounces), 7 SunSugar, 5 Black and Brown Boar(1) (9 ounces), 5 Jaune Flamme(1), 5 Japanese Black Trifele, 4 Black Krim(1) (new) (9.5 ounces, 6.5 ounces, 7.5 ounces, 7.5 ounces), 4 Chinese Tea, 4 Crimson Cushion (7.5 ounces, 7.5 ounces, 8 ounces), 3 Indigo Apple(1), 3 Yellow Currant, 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Matt's Wild Cherry, 3 Noire Charbonneuse(1) (6 ounces), 2 Big Bite (10 ounces, 9 ounces), 2 Garden Peach, 2 Indigo Rose, 2 Jaune Flamme(2), 2 Green Grape, 2 Pink Furry Boar (6 ounces), 2 Watermelon (20.5 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 2 Black From Tula (9 ounces, 9 ounces), Persimmon (new) (26 ounces), Marmara (new) (6 ounces), German Orange Strawberry (new) (8 ounces), Marianna's Peace (new) (12.5 ounces), Berkeley Tie Dye (12.5 ounces), Redfield Beauty, Speckled Roman(1), Dr. Wyche's Yellow (11 ounces), Oaxacan Jewel (17 ounces), Speckled Roman(2) (7 ounces), Sweet 100, Pineapple Pig (14 ounces), Black Cherry(1), Black Krim(2) (10 ounces), Oaxacan Pink (10 ounces), Giant Syrian (17.5 ounces), Black and Brown Boar(2) and Black Cherry(2) for a total of 191 tomatoes.

Pineapple Pig fell over into Black Cherry(1) yesterday. My wife told me about it when I got home from work so I propped it up immediately.

In the morning it was obvious another big Pineapple(1) tomato got hit by an animal of some sort. About half the tomato was eaten, similar to other tomatoes under the lemon tree.

Marianna's Peace wasn't a surprise -- I had misidentified it as Purple Dog Creek. I forgot to check Delicious so I'd better check it tomorrow. The Persimmon tomato was both a surprise and a beauty. It looks very similar to Dr. Wyche's Yellow.

We've now harvested over 900 SunGold tomatoes (929), 300 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes (316) and 100 Red Currant tomatoes (111).

Oaxacan Pink is most likely another Oaxacan Jewel. I'll probably change the name over the next few days.

Harvested Vorlon and Chile Verde!

Today's harvest includes 56 SunGold, 19 Husky Cherry Red(1), 14 Husky Cherry Red(2), 9 Carmello (7 ounces), 6 Red Currant, 6 SunSugar, 5 Black and Brown Boar(1) (6 ounces), 5 Oaxacan Jewel (10 ounces, 12 ounces, 18.5 ounces, 16.5 ounces, 14 ounces), 4 Yellow Currant, 4 Giant Syrian (16 ounces, 12 ounces, 19.5 ounces, 8 ounces), 4 Chinese Tea, 4 Yellow Perfection, 4 Japanese Black Trifele (9.5 ounces), 4 Jaune Flamme(1), 3 Noire Charbonneuse(1), 3 Crimson Cushion, 2 Chile Verde (new), 2 Green Grape, 2 Green Zebra, 2 Nyagous(2) (not Nyagous), 2 Indigo Apple(1), 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Thessaloniki, 2 Jaune Flamme(2), 2 Garden Peach, 2 Indigo Apple(2), 2 Black Krim(2) (7.5 ounces), 2 Black From Tula (8 ounces, 9 ounces), 2 Nyagous(1), 2 Brown Berry, 2 Pink Furry Boar, Vorlon (new), Berkeley Tie Dye, Speckled Roman(2), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Matt's Wild Cherry, Pierce's Pride(2), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), Big Bite, Indigo Rose, Pineapple Pig (10.5 ounces), Brad's Black Heart (7 ounces), Black and Brown Boar(2), Snow White(1), Black Cherry(2) and Tolstoi for a total of 195 tomatoes.

Yesterday Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) was leaning into the lemon tree. So during yesterday's harvest I propped it back to be straight off the ground. Mistake! My wife reported that it had fallen completely to the ground later in the day. She later picked it up and propped it against the Pinapple(1) tomato. I staked it in this morning.

Speaking of which, I was able to point out the half-eaten remains of a Pineapple(1) tomato to my wife. She later disposed it. We looked at Black Cherry(1). I think we'll end up adding a concrete reinforcing wire support trellis for it in the future. Meanwhile it's still doubled over.

Maturing tomatoes include Purple Dog Creek and Delicious. I almost pulled Delicious today so I'll assume it will be ready tomorrow. I know there are other maturing tomatoes.

The two Chile Verde tomatoes look great! The trouble, though, is these are the only two tomatoes on the plant.

Here's an image of today's harvest.

We've now harvested over 1500 back yard tomatoes for the year (1586) and over harvested 2500 tomatoes (2684) this year.

Harvested Speckled Roman(3), Nyagous(2) and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1)!

Today's harvest includes 73 SunGold, 12 Husky Cherry Red(2), 12 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Red Currant, 6 Green Grape, 5 Yellow Currant, 3 Nyagous(1), 3 Sweet Million, 3 Speckled Roman(2), 3 Yellow Perfection, 2 Nyagous(2) (new) (not Nyagous), 2 Tolstoi, 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Big Bite, 2 Jaune Flamme(1), 2 Crimson Cushion, 2 Carmello, 2 Oaxacan Jewel (9.5 ounces, 13 ounces), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1) (new) (7 ounces), Speckled Roman(3) (new), Speckled Roman(1), Chinese Tea, Berkeley Tie Dye (6 ounces), Matt's Wild Cherry, Sweet 100, Black Cherry(1), Black From Tula (6 ounces), Black Krim(2) (6 ounces), Thessaloniki, Giant Syrian (11 ounces), Garden Peach, Indigo Rose, Jaune Flamme(2) and SunSugar for a total of 158 tomatoes.

My wife watered the back yard tomatoes yesterday. Afterwards, Black Cherry(1) fell into Brad's Black Heart. I fixed Black Cherry(1) in the morning. But Brad's Black Heart sustained some minor damage.

Two days ago it got up to 98.5 at Pierce College, about a mile away. Yesterday it got up to 103.1. Today may be even hotter. Watch the smaller tomatoes ripen faster (73 SunGolds!) followed by the mid-sized tomatoes and so on. We should have a wave of tomatoes in the few days as the heat pushes them to maturity.

I had a computer board meeting in the evening and brought tomatoes to the other board members.

Maturing tomatoes include Amazon Chocolate and Oaxacan Pink.

We've now harvested over 700 SunGold tomatoes (703)!

Harvested 3 New Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 37 SunGold, 15 Husky Cherry Red(1), 13 Husky Cherry Red(2), 7 Green Grape, 7 Crimson Cushion (6.5 ounces, 7 ounces, 6 ounces, 7 ounces), 6 SunSugar, 6 Yellow Perfection, 5 Red Currant, 5 Matt's Wild Cherry, 4 Dr. Wyche's Yellow (8.5 ounces, 10.5 ounces, 26.5 ounces, 11 ounces), 4 Yellow Currant, 3 Snow White(1), 3 Nyagous(1), 2 Chinese Tea, 2 Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) (7.5 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 2 Sweet Million, 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Carmello, Berkeley Tie Dye (new) (17.5 ounces), Garden Peach (new), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg (new), Black and Brown Boar(1), Ella's Pink Plum, Big Bite, Black Krim(2), Black From Tula (6 ounces), Giant Syrian (12 ounces) and Indigo Rose for a total of 135 tomatoes.

That's not a misprint, we picked a Dr. Wyche's Yellow that weighed more than one and a half pounds. Our record to date was a Mexico tomato that came in at 30 ounces.

Here's an image of today's harvest:

The pile in the lower left are the Crimson Cushions. The yellow row on the right are the Dr. Wyche's Yellow tomatoes. The beautiful Berkeley Tie Dye is next to the postal scale used to weigh the tomatoes. The back left has the two Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) tomatoes. And behind it is Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg.

Speaking of which, we had another small taste test this morning for breakfast. We tried Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Green Zebra, Yellow Furry Boar and Indigo Apple. Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg was the winner of this bunch. We harvested it at just the right time and the flavor really popped. Green Zebra and Indigo Apple were both good. The loser was Yellow Furry Boar. But there's no point in describing what was wrong with it because we simply tried it too late. We harvested it maybe a day too late but took three days to sample it from there. It gets a pass.

Yesterday my in-laws came over while I was at work. They brought our dog back (My wife had dropped our dog off with her parents before the 4th so we could enjoy dinner with some out of town friends that evening. You shouldn't leave a dog alone with fireworks going off everywhere...) and spent the afternoon with my wife. They loved the tomato sauce my wife made.

During the visit the dehydrator was brought out of the garage and set up. Many tomatoes were cut up and placed in the dehydrator. The contraption was left on over night and the tomato slices slowly dried. Here's an image from today:

Maturing tomatoes include Black Krim(1), White Zebra, Speckled Roman(3) and Italian Heirloom.

We've now havested more tomatoes as of July 7 (858) than we did in all of June (842).

And we've harvested over 500 SunGold tomatoes this year (512).

Harvested Seven New Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 66 SunGold, 11 Husky Cherry Red(2), 8 Matt's Wild Cherry, 8 SunSugar, 8 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Red Currant, 5 Yellow Currant, 5 Sweet Million, 5 Yellow Perfection, 5 Speckled Roman(2) (6.5 ounces, 7 ounces), 5 Green Grape, 5 Crimson Cushion (8 ounces, 6 ounces, 6 ounces), 4 Nyagous(1), 3 Sweet 100, 3 Black Cherry(1), 3 Black From Tula (8 ounces, 13.5 ounces), 2 Ella's Pink Plum, 2 Speckled Roman(1), 2 Chinese Tea, 2 Taxi, 2 Redfield Beauty, 2 Giant Syrian (8 ounces, 12 ounces), 2 Dr. Wyche's Yellow (14 ounces, 6.5 ounces), Jaune Flamme(1) (new), Oaxacan Jewel (new) (19.5 ounces), Watermelon (new) (12.5 ounces), Indigo Apple(2) (new), Green Zebra (new), Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) (new) (12 ounces), Big Bite (new) (7 ounces), Black Krim(2), Carmello (6 ounces), Thessaloniki, Indigo Rose and Jaune Flamme(2) for a total of 176 tomatoes.

Wow what a harvest! It's not the amount, it's the size of the tomatoes. My wife took an image of the harvest.

Lower left -- the five Crimson Cushion tomatoes. Behind it, Watermelon. The dark tomato in the front is Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2). The two tomatoes between Watermelon, Crimson Cushion and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) are Giant Syrian. Just to the right of Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) is Indigo Apple(2). Behind Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) and Indigo Apple(2) are 5 Speckled Roman(2) tomatoes. The large yellow/pink tomato is Oaxacan Jewel. To the right of Oaxacan Jewel are two orange tomatoes -- Dr. Wyche's Yellow. Behind Dr. Wyches' Yellow are two dark tomatoes -- Black From Tula.

My wife watered the container plants yesterday. Also, she spent four hours canning tomatoes.

Last night my wife and I sampled a few tomatoes. These included Taxi, Black and Brown Boar(2), Indigo Rose and Speckled Roman(2). My wife loved Taxi a lot. I liked it a lot as well. We both were amazed at Black and Brown Boar(2). Good looking exterior, good looking interior and a juicy, fresh taste. I remembered this from last year and I was only so-so at best regarding the flavor. This tomato was so delicious, so unlike what I remember that I'm left to believe I'm thinking of a different tomato. Indigo Rose is oddly refreshing. It's odd in that I've never run across a dark skinned tomato with a refreshing taste. My wife says it's because of the pink interior. We like it, it's good. Speckled Roman(2) was good but not great. That was due to the tomato being a day or two past prime maturity. It's not the fault of the tomato, we waited a bit too late. Still, it was quite good -- the meaty flavor still came through.

Here's a picture of Indigo Rose sliced in half. Does this remind you of a plum?

Indigo Apple(2) and Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(2) were both surprises. I didn't know these plants had ripening tomatoes. The Green Zebra may be the only tomato we harvest off of this plant. The plant is obviously diseased. Oaxacan Jewel and Watermelon both look beautiful!

Plants with maturing tomatoes include Nyagous(2), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken and Pineapple Pig. But Nyagous(2) clearly isn't a Nyagous. Until we can truly identify it, Nyagous(2) it is.

We've now harvested over 1000 tomatoes from the back yard this year (1025).

Harvested Giant Syrian, Black Krim and Black From Tula!

Today's harvest includes 29 SunGold, 19 Husky Cherry Red(1), 11 Husky Cherry Red(2), 8 Nyagous(1), 6 Sweet Million, 5 Matt's Wild Cherry, 5 Red Currant, 5 Yellow Perfection, 4 SunSugar, 3 Crimson Cushion (8 ounces, 7 ounces), 2 Speckled Roman(2) (6 ounces, 6.5 ounces), 2 Sweet Baby Girl, 2 Sweet 100, 2 Carmello, Black Krim (new) (9.5 ounces), Black From Tula (new), Giant Syrian (new) (15 ounces), Dr. Wyche's Yellow (19.5 ounces), Yellow Currant, Black Cherry(1), Thessaloniki, Jaune Flamme(2), Tolstoi and Green Grape for a total of 113 tomatoes.

The Black Krim would look gorgeous if there wasn't a gash out of it. The gash doesn't look like birds, but something got it. The tomato was laying on the ground as it was maturing. Yesterday my wife took off a leaking, maturing tomato off the vine about a foot off the ground from this plant and threw it away.

We have more images to post when the time permits.

Sweet Baby Girl may be picked clean. I've only looked casually, but I don't see any tomato on the plant.

The maturing tomato list includes Brad's Black Heart, Indigo Apple(1) (!), Berkeley Tie-Dye(!), Black and Brown Boar(1), Oaxacan Jewel, Big Bite, Garden Peach and probably others. The tide gets heavier!

Harvested More Husky Cherry Red(2) Tomatoes!

Friday's harvest: Husky Cherry Red(2).

My wife watered the back yard tomatoes. But it took 2 and a half hours to hand water. We're looking into drip systems and soaker hoses.

My wife also purchased an Aunt Ruby's German Green to replace Vorlon(2). In the evening I put in all the extensions to the Texas Cages -- some of our tomato plants are already getting large!

We were busy all day Saturday so nothing happened in the garden.

On Sunday I snipped off the lower stems in the front yard. Also, I spent a fair amount "training" the tomato plants. In the evening (just before the eclipse) we purchased green stakes for our cages.

We wanted to get more done on Sunday but it simply got too hot. It got up to 98 degrees.

What's left to do? Plant Aunt Ruby's German Green. Make about six more cages and install them. At that point -- finally!!! -- it's maintenance. Maintenance includes "training" the plants, staking them, fertilizing the containers and watering.

Several plants have growing tomatoes. These include Taxi, Giant Syrian, Thessaloniki and Black Cherry(1).

Today's harvest: Husky Cherry Red(2).

How Does It Look For This Year?

Now that we're all the tomato seedlings are planted for the year (famous last words), how do I think they will do this year?

Here's some bullets that will indicate we will have a really good year:

1) Look back on our February 20 post of this year. Some of that compostible dirt was placed on our yellowing back yard grass, for lack of any other place to put it. The grass is completely green. A big heaping pile was placed in the "koi pond". Last year we didn't add soil and the soil level had noticeably dropped an inch or so.

There was so much soil we placed it everywhere, including the plantable area of back yard.

2) Based on the great results last year in the "Far East", I continued to dig deep holes there and in the backyard cutout. As a rough estimate, we pulled out about 350 pounds of rock and asphalt over the last five weeks or so from these two areas.

3) The plants look great. The only plant that looks like it may be struggling is Bloody Butcher.

4) The sweet peas and snap peas planted in the "koi pond" this last winter will add needed nitrogen to the soil.

And some bullets that indicate we'll have a mediocre year:

1) Sure we dug some deep holes in the back yard, but it took extra time. The seedlings got huge in their containers. Could they be root bound? Some plants looked to be at least 18 inches tall. That can't be good. Granted, all these seedlings are four to six inches above ground when planted, but we think planting tall seedlings isn't as "safe" as planting smaller seedlings.

2) Some of the larger seedlings had black spots on their leaves. One long seedling had a black bruising in the middle of the stem.

3) Lots of beefsteaks were planted somewhat late. If we hit 110 degrees in late June (like 2008) or early July, the flowers will sterilize and we'll end up with little to no harvest on these plants with longer maturation cycles.

The seedlings look great...but we say that every year. But they really do look great! We think the compostible dirt has really helped the garden overall. Not just the tomato seedlings but the back yard grass, the irises, roses, etc..

I suspect our count for the year won't be that high. As mentioned, we planted a lot of larger tomatoes this year. From memory: Giant Syrian, Omar's Lebanese, Big Zebra, Delicious, Big Bite, Amana Orange and Pineapple are a few of the plants that can produce tomatoes over one pound. We got over 2700 tomatoes from Matt's Wild Cherry last year in the "koi pond", but this year we planted it in a pot. We won't get 2700 tomatoes from this plant this year.

My guess: We're more dependent on the weather this year than on other years. I'm going to guess a total of 7000 tomatoes harvested this year. But we will harvest more pounds than last year.

I'm excited for this year's harvest!

Planted Five Seedlings In the Backyard Cutout

This morning I got five more tomatoes into the ground in the backyard cutout area. These five tomatoes are Giant Syrian, Japanese Black Trifele, Thessaloniki, Crimson Cushion and Carmello.

Last year I spent a great deal of time digging holes and removing rocks and asphalt from the "Far East" area of our backyard -- the area to the east of our grass area (and grass cutout area) near our eastern fence. The results of hours and hours of digging was dramatic. This area was near spectacular, and I'd argue even slightly better than our signature area, the "koi pond" in the front yard. Prior years in the "Far East" were, at best, mediocre.

So what's the point? I had realized that our backyard cutout area (where we planted today's five tomato seedlings) has done reasonably well, but nothing that has knocked our socks off. But then again, not bad either. It's my supposition that this area may have asphalt in the soil (which I knew to be true already), just not as concentrated as the "Far East".

So I dug as keep as I could go for these five holes. Two were done on Saturday, three today. And my findings were consistent with my theory. There were significant amounts of asphalt to throw away, but the concentration wasn't as heavy as in the "Far East". The soil below Japanese Black Trifele had the biggest pieces -- a couple were as wide (and thicker) than hamburger patties.

So we only planted five new tomato seedlings in this area. But note, it will be harder to plant these five tomatoes than it will be to plant the whole front yard. There's no buried asphalt there and the soil has been previously dug out and replaced.
