Seven More Plants Pulled...

Today's harvest includes 5 Husky Cherry Red(1), SunGold, Ella's Pink Plum, German Orange Strawberry, Snow White(1) and Purple Dog Creek for a total of 10 tomatoes.

My wife pulled Nebraska Wedding and Speckled Roman(3) yesterday. But the day before there were five additional plants removed: Yellow Perfection, Red Currant, Matt's Wild Cherry Sweet Million and Oaxacan Pink. And there's still more plants that can be pulled...

No new milestones for today. 

Harvested Over 10,000 Tomatoes This Year!

Today's harvest includes 7 SunGold, 6 Indigo Rose, 5 Snow White(1), 4 Black Cherry(2), 4 Carmello, 3 Yellow Perfection, 3 Snow White(2), 2 Big Bite (7 ounces), 2 Gypsy, 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Red Currant, 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), Redfield Beauty, Indigo Apple(1), Brad's Black Heart (12.5 ounces), Olga's Round Yellow Chicken Egg, Sweet Million, Pink Berkeley Tie Dye(1), Thessaloniki, Husky Cherry Red(1), Japanese Black Trifele, Watermelon (7 ounces) and SunSugar for a total of 53 tomatoes.

We've now harvested over 10,000 tomatoes for the year (10046)!! Also, we've harvested over 6500 tomatoes in the back yard (6539) and over 3500 tomatoes in the front yard (3507). It's been a great year so far!

The Brad's Black Heart is a late beauty!

We are now within 100 SunGold tomatoes of our all time harvest for one plant per year (Matt's Wild Cherry, 2727 tomatoes) with 2628 harvested tomatoes so far this year.

It got up to 99 yesterday with as low as 10 percent humidity. It should be even warmer today.

My wife should be pulling out some tomato plants today.

I added fertilizer to the container plants this morning.

We've now harvested over 200 Red Currant tomatoes (201), over 50 Big Bite tomatoes (51) and 50 Thessaloniki tomatoes.

Again, today's numbers got goosed upward because I didn't harvest on Saturday.

Speckled Roman(2) kicked out a lot of tomatoes but it's because the plant has basically died. We have three or four more that can be pulled.

Friday's high: 103.1. Yesterday's high: 97.4. It's still hot but we may get cooler weather in the near future.

We hit a few numeric landmarks today. We've now harvested over 6000 tomatoes from the back yard this year (6074). Also, we've harvested over 2500 SunGold tomatoes (2527), over 750 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes (759), over 650 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (659), over 250 Snow White(2) tomatoes (254), over 100 Sweet Million tomaotes (104) and over 50 Speckled Roman(2) tomatoes (51).

Yesterday's high: 105.8. It was particularly warm at night, making it difficult to sleep.

My wife made sauce out of some of the tomatoes but other than that, not much happened. It's been so hot that other house items have backed up.

We've now harvested over 500 front yard tomatoes this month. Also, we've harvested over 700 Husky Cherry Red(2) tomatoes (715) and over 200 Snow White(2) tomatoes (205) this year.

We've now harvested over 6000 tomatoes for the month of July (6088)! This is a sign of a tremendous month. If time permits, I'll do a comparison with prior years (I didn't have time at the end of June to go across years). But I can state -- our tomatoes have been quite tasty (truly the only thing that matters), large and plentiful. Everything else is just noise.

I realized yesterday afternoon that I had missed the second to back row in the back yard cutout. I made it a point to go there today and found some good Amazon Chocolate, Black Cherry(2) and Ramapo tomatoes.

My wife watered some of the front yard tomatoes yesterday.

After today's harvest I told my wife that Paul Robeson was done. She pulled it out about 20 minutes later.

Other than that, Black Cherry and Snow White are keeping our numbers high. We like both tomatoes, so this is great!

A Big Zebra tomato is maturing. And I need to take a look at Neves Azorean Red, I don't know what the heck is happening with that plant. I know we haven't harvested anything for this one.

We've harvested over 200 Black Cherry(1) tomatoes (220) and 100 Garden Peach tomatoes. Also, we've now harvested over 2000 front yard tomatoes in July and over 5500 tomatoes for 2012 (5739).

My wife watered the back yard tomatoes yesterday. Afterwards, Black Cherry(1) fell into Brad's Black Heart. I fixed Black Cherry(1) in the morning. But Brad's Black Heart sustained some minor damage.

Two days ago it got up to 98.5 at Pierce College, about a mile away. Yesterday it got up to 103.1. Today may be even hotter. Watch the smaller tomatoes ripen faster (73 SunGolds!) followed by the mid-sized tomatoes and so on. We should have a wave of tomatoes in the few days as the heat pushes them to maturity.

I had a computer board meeting in the evening and brought tomatoes to the other board members.

Maturing tomatoes include Amazon Chocolate and Oaxacan Pink.

We've now harvested over 700 SunGold tomatoes (703)!  

Harvested Taxi!

Today's harvest includes 23 SunGold, 14 Husky Cherry Red(1), 9 Husky Cherry Red(2), 4 Matt's Wild Cherry, 4 Yellow Currant, 2 Black Cherry(1), 2 Carmello, 2 Ella's Pink Plum, 2 Red Currant, 2 SunSugar, 2 Green Grape, Taxi (new), Indigo Rose, Redfield Beauty, Speckled Roman(2), Sweet Baby Girl, Sweet Million and Sweet 100 for a total of 73 tomatoes.

I was a little hesitant to try Indigo Rose but my wife wanted to try it right away. I thought we should wait a day or two. I was wrong. It was ready. My wife tried it first. "Perfect" (As in it's ready to eat right now and it tastes really good). I tried it, liked it and would grow it again. I'll have to try it again to give a better description of the taste short of it tasted good. The interior of the tomato is unique. There's not a formal separation between the outer walls and the interior -- like a plum in a way. I'll have to take a picture of this tomato cut in half. The picture will show what I'm saying better than I can put it into words. Two thumbs up!

Our Husky Cherry Red tomatoes are really good this year.

Today's Redfield Beauty is overripe and has a large flaw with it. I suspect it will get thrown out.

We didn't do anything with the tomato plants yesterday. This morning I put fertilizer in all the container plants.

We've now harvested over 200 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes (202)! And we've harvested over 1000 tomatoes for the year (1004)! 

Harvested Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Speckled Roman(2) and Indigo Rose!

Today's harvest includes 23 SunGold, 18 Husky Cherry Red(2), 11 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 SunSugar, 2 Green Grape, Dr. Wyche's Yellow (new) (17 ounces), Speckled Roman(2) (new), Indigo Rose (new), Nyagous(1), Noire Charbonneuse(1), Sweet Million, Sweet 100, Ella's Pink Plum, Red Currant, Carmello and Thessaloniki for a total of 67 tomatoes.

Dr. Wyche's Yellow is the first harvested tomato of 2012 that's six ounces or more. And that's not a misprint -- it weighs in at one pound, one ounce. That's an unusual size for our first big tomato of the year! What's scary is there appears to be bigger tomatoes on the vine for this plant.

The harvested Speckled Roman(2) is a good size. Not quite hand grenade thick but it looks excellent nonetheless.

The Indigo Rose had a slight red glow at the shoulders yesterday. Today it was more pronounced so I harvested it. On the side I was looking at it was dark, dark, dark with a red aura at the top. On the other side the darkness was much less pronounced. We may wait a day or two to try it just to see if the red areas become more pronounced.

In a slightly unusual situation, our harvest numbers are dropping because a couple of our container plants (Sweet Baby Girl, Sweet Million and Sweet 100, for example) are simply exhausted. They should get a second wind but it will be a couple of weeks or more I believe.

And in another unusual situation, the Husky Cherry Red plants aren't as tall as they were a week or two ago. The weight of the fruit is pulling down the branches!

The maturing tomatoes include Speckled Roman(1), Black Krim(2), Tolstoi and Black From Tula. It's getting serious now, the big boys are coming... 

An Indigo Rose is Maturing!

Today's harvest includes 21 SunGold, 18 Husky Cherry Red(1), 14 Husky Cherry Red(2), 4 Red Currant, 3 Nyagous(1), 2 Matt's Wild Cherry, 2 Sweet Baby Girl, 2 Yellow Currant, Sweet Million, Ella's Pink Plum, Black Cherry(1), Carmello and SunSugar for a total of 71 tomatoes.

I had another Yellow Furry Boar harvested but it had both damage and a worm on it. Nope. Thrown away, doesn't count.

A fair amount of new maturing tomatoes are almost ripe -- I'll probably pick them tomorrow.

Harvested (and Tossed) Yellow Furry Boar!

Yesterday's harvest includes 18 SunGold, 15 Husky Cherry Red(1), 11 Husky Cherry Red(2), 10 Sweet Baby Girl, 10 Sweet 100, 4 Nyagous(1), 4 Black Cherry(1), 3 Sweet Million, 3 SunSugar, 2 Matt's Wild Cherry, 2 Red Currant, 2 Yellow Perfection, Yellow Furry Boar (new) for a total of 85 tomatoes.

Today's harvest includes 23 SunGold, 17 Husky Cherry Red(2), 16 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Sweet 100, 4 Nyagous(1), 4 Matt's Wild Cherry, 4 Yellow Currant, 4 SunSugar, 3 Sweet Baby Girl, 2 Sweet Million, 2 Red Currant, 2 Black Cherry(1) and Crimson Cushion for a total of 88 tomatoes.

I was going to post that Yellow Furry Boar was a bit of a surprise, but it was damaged (It looked like a bird had pecked it). I figured my wife wouldn't try to salvage it, though it was a possibility. She didn't. She tossed it. I still counted this one because it didn't prematurely mature do to malformation -- it's just the first tomato for that plant got hit by a bird's beak.

The Green Zebra plant appears to be diseased.

I did a fair amount of staking and taping yesterday evening. A fair amount of plants are leaning due to growing up out the top of the cage and getting top heavy. It's getting harder and harder to maneuver around some of these plants...

My wife watered the patio tomato plants yesterday.

Taxi, Creme Brulee and Jaune Flamme(2) have maturing tomatoes. I'm sure there are others. The maturing Dr. Wyche's Yellow is large.

We've now harvested over 200 SunGold (217) tomatoes. 

Harvested Thessaloniki, Black Cherry(2) and Redfield Beauty!

This morning's harvest includes 18 SunGold, 12 Sweet Baby Girl, 11 Husky Cherry Red(1), 6 Husky Cherry Red(2), 3 Matt's Wild Cherry, 3 SunSugar, 2 Nyagous(1), 2 Sweet Million, 2 Sweet 100, 2 Red Currant, 2 Yellow Perfection, Redfield Beauty (new), Thessaloniki (new), Black Cherry(2) (new), Yellow Currant and Black Cherry(1) for a total of 68 tomatoes.

Yesterday evening I took a little time to look at the tomatoes. Black Cherry(2) was a surprise -- the tomato I was looking at was not only maturing, it was ready for harvest. So I harvested it this morning. I saw a small Redfield Beauty maturing. I decided to harvest it right away because the tomato had some large flaws. We're not going to be able to eat it as is. My wife will cut it up and save the good parts for a salad or a dish. It was good enough to use, so it gets counted.

But the main issue was with the two Husky Cherry Red tomato plants. The two plants had been sprawling. A couple of the branches were getting so heavy that they were doubling over due to the weight of the tomatoes. I've been essentially avoiding the repair work until I had more time. I had "fixed" one branch yesterday morning but by the time I got back in the evening, the branch was wilting. The branch developed a weakness that affected the rest of the branch. I brought my wife over to literally stand between the two plants (propping them both up where they met), added a couple of stakes and tape. We lost about a dozen Husky Cherry Red tomatoes fixing the branches. It remains to be seen if the bad branch is saved. It had about 40 growing tomatoes on it.

But I also saw other maturing tomatoes. These include Speckled Roman(2), Dr. Wyche's Yellow and this morning it appears that Giant Syrian is maturing.

The weather this week will top off in the low 90's. A lot of plants will get maturing tomatoes.

I won't be able to look at the plants this evening. I could have some surprises tomorrow morning.

Harvested Black Cherry(1)!

Today's harvest includes 23 SunGold, 9 Husky Cherry Red(1), 7 Sweet Baby Girl, 6 Sweet 100, 5 Husky Cherry Red(2), 2 Sweet Million, 2 Matt's Wild Cherry, Black Cherry(1) (new), Yellow Perfection, Nyagous(1), Crimson Cushion, SunSugar and Green Grape for a total of 60 tomatoes.

I didn't do any work on the tomatoes yesterday evening. Around this time of the year I'm doing a bit of "gathering", taping, staking and looking for maturing tomatoes. I missed Black Cherry(1). The one harvested today was tiny, but there's plenty of larger tomatoes maturing for Black Cherry(1).

My wife watered the front yard tomatoes, the container plants, the tomato plants in the redwood raised bed and the ones by the lemon tree. She'll complete the watering this morning.

We've now harvested over 500 tomatoes for the month and for the year. 

Harvested Noire Charbonneuse(1) and Carmello!

Today's harvest includes 21 SunGold, 11 Husky Cherry Red(2), 8 Sweet 100, 8 Husky Cherry Red(1),  6 Sweet Baby Girl, 3 Yellow Currant, 3 Matt's Wild Cherry, 3 SunSugar, 2 Green Grape, 2 Nyagous(1), Noire Charbonneuse(1) (new), Carmello (new), Sweet Million and Red Currant for a total of 71 tomatoes.

Yesterday my mother-in-law and her older sister came to visit. We roasted zucchini, eggplant, chile, chicken and skewered tomatoes on the barbeque. The food was good and the company was good as well. We visited a local carnival in our neighborhood for a short period of time. We gave most of our remaining harvested tomatoes to our relatives to take home.

I did a fair amount of hand trimming old and yellowing tomato leaves in the front yard in the evening.

Noire Charbonneuse was my favorite tomato of 2007. The one we harvested today was a little blotchy, but it was ready to harvest. 

Harvested Green Grape, Ella's Pink Plum and Yellow Currant!

Today's harvest includes 10 Husky Cherry Red(1), 8 SunGold, 5 Husky Cherry Red(2), 4 Green Grape (new), 4 Sweet Baby Girl, 3 Yellow Perfection, 2 Yellow Currant (new), 2 Ella's Pink Plum (new) Sweet Million and SunSugar for a total of 40 tomatoes.

We were anticipating harvesting the Yellow Currant and Ella's Pink Plum tomatoes but the Green Grape tomatoes came as a surprise! I noticed them yesterday evening. The Green Grape tomatoes look fantastic! I'll have a couple more to harvest tomorrow.

I harvested a couple of Yellow Perfection tomatoes a little sooner than normal. These were literally touching the ground. We have a small pile of uneaten tomatoes, and they'll just join the pile.

Other plants with maturing tomatoes include Noire Charbonneuse(1), Thessaloniki and Carmello.

I did a little more trimming, training, staking and looking for maturing tomates yesterday evening. At this point I'm more fighting for maneuvering room with the training than anything else. These plants are already quite tall.

Update: Our toy poodle was barking in the back yard most of the morning, to the point where I was getting somewhat annoyed. I brought him inside when I intended to start this blog post. As I was typing, he clearly wanted to go back out. Eventually he started to scratch the door. My wife decided to let him out, but she followed.

Turns out we had trapped an opossum in a HavaHart trap. That in and of itself isn't unusual, we have to do that once or twice a year. What made it unusual is that we didn't bait the trap! The opossum went in there all by himself (or herself). Now we know what our poodle was excited about.

On the way back in the house, I asked my wife to check out Ella's Pink Plum. She tested them and found them ready to harvest. I hadn't finished posting today's blog so I added them to today's numbers. 

Ella's Pink Plum Has Maturing Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 8 Husky Cherry Red(2), 7 SunGold, 6 Husky Cherry Red(1), Matt's Wild Cherry, Sweet Baby Girl, Sweet Million, Red Currant and Nyagous(1) for a total of 26 tomatoes.

My wife watered in the fertilizer for the other two front yard tomato plants yesterday. I did a bit of training when I got home from work, but things were mostly in order.

When harvesting this morning I noted that Ella's Pink Plum has a couple of maturing tomatoes! We look forward to both seeing and eating this tomato -- it looks interesting. 

All Previous 2012 Harvested Tomatoes Were Harvested Today

Today's harvest includes 7 SunGold, 7 Sweet Baby Girl, 6 Nyagous(1), 6 Husky Cherry Red(1), 4 Yellow Perfection, 3 Matt's Wild Cherry, 3 Sweet 100, 3 Husky Cherry Red(2), 3 SunSugar, 2 Sweet Million and Red Currant for a total of 45 tomatoes.

SunGold has passed Husky Cherry Red(1) in production. Currently I've harvested 68 SunGold and 62 Husky Cherry Red(1) tomatoes. There's plenty more for both plants though SunGold should keep the lead.

Independently of yesterday's blog post, my wife harvested 5 Nyagous(1) yesterday morning. She noted that they were looking too soft -- essentially I waited too late to harvest this batch. She'll be able to save these by using them in cooking. I harvested a sixth one this morning.

I believe that every tomato harvested previously this year was also harvested today.

My wife finished watering the front yard tomatoes and completely watered the back yard tomatoes. That took over half the day. By the time I got home in the evening one of the plants in the back yard had fallen down. Don't panic, it didn't fall completely down, it fell into a rose bush. I believe the plant that fell was Nyagous(2). I called my wife over and she knew the drill -- she held the plant upright while I got a hammer, glove and a couple of stakes. I used two wooden stakes on the outside of the cage to "cradle" it and it seems no worse for the wear.

This morning another plant had fallen, but it had fallen into another plant. For this one I used a six foot, three quarter inch non-wooden stake and placed on the inside of the cage to support it.

So why do they fall? Three factors go into it. 1) A recent watering loosens the ground underneath 2) A relatively small cage compared to the others and 3) A plant that's outgrown the smaller cage. Essentially the plant becomes top heavy with vines and fruit. If the plant falls flat on the ground there's always some damage but that doesn't occur often. Usually they fall into another plant and that other plant prevents any real damage.

I didn't do much training at all yesterday. I can tell there's a lot to do.

I did add fertilizer to about eight plants in the front yard and the two Husky Cherry plants in the back yard. My wife may water it in today.

I don't see any maturing tomatoes that are changing to their mature color, but I do see a lot of tomatoes that are darkening. This is the step before they change to their mature color. Expect a lot of maturing tomatoes over the next couple weeks. 

Harvested Nyagous(1)!

Today's harvest includes 6 SunGold, 5 Sweet Baby Girl, 4 Matt's Wild Cherry, 4 Husky Cherry Red(1), 3 Yellow Perfection, 2 Nyagous(1) (new), 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), Sweet Million and Sweet 100 for a total of 28 tomatoes

Husky Cherry Red(2) had some falling branches this morning. The weight of the fruit on the branches, plus the fact the branches got wet this morning (The sprinklers hit this tomato plant) pulled down several of them. I tied and staked them the best I could without getting too soaked, but lost a couple of tomatoes in the process.

We harvested Nyagous(1) today! However, I may have waited a day too late. They look a bit dessicated.

It got up to over 97 degrees yesterday. That was unexpected. Had I known that I would have harvested Nyagous(1) on Saturday. The ripening bunch is near a cage wire (within a half inch) and when it gets hot, the actual cage heats up, affecting the fruit abutting or touching the cage wire.

My wife watered part of the "koi pond" yesterday. She'll water some more today.

I added fertilizer to the container plants but it needs to be watered in.

Crimson Cushion has a maturing tomato! I'm surprised it's maturing this soon -- this plant has a long duration to maturity. 

Harvested Yellow Perfection!

Today's harvest includes 8 SunGold, 7 Husky Cherry Red(2), 2 Sweet Baby Girl, 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), Yellow Perfection (new) and Sweet Million for a total of 21 tomatoes.

I did some training of all the tomato plants yesterday. My wife cleaned up Sweet Baby Girl, getting rid of a lot of undergrowth.

The only plant I know doesn't have growing tomatoes that wasn't planted late (meaning: excludes Aunt Ruby's German Green and Pineapple(2), the grafted tomato plant) on it is Copper River. And while that plant isn't that tall or full, the color looks very good and has a few blooms on it. Now that I research it, Copper River was planted pretty late as well.

All the plants in the front yard have a growing tomato. I didn't mention that Pierce's Pride(2) has a growing tomato -- it's had several for some time. At some point in the future I'll check the plants one by one and check off all the ones that don't have growing tomatoes.

Matt's Wild Cherry has a maturing tomato. 

Kings Win!!

Today's harvest: 6 Husky Cherry Red(2), 5 Husky Cherry Red(1), 5 SunGold, 2 Sweet Million and 2 Sweet Baby Girl for a total of 20 tomatoes.

I woke up earlier than usual yesterday. In the morning all I did was harvest.

I got home early from work, just in time to start watching hockey with my wife. The Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup!!!!!!!!! Enough said.

When I woke up this morning the Kings had still won the Stanley Cup. It wasn't a dream. I did a little bit of training during this morning's harvest.
