Janet's Jacinthe Jewel Not Looking Healthy

Today's harvest includes 10 Sunchocola, 9 Orange Paruche, 5 SunGold, 2 Stupice, Yellow Perfection and Sugar Snack for a total of 28 tomatoes.

A relative was graduating from college this morning and we went to a lunch celebration in Pasadena. We brought all of today's harvest with us to share with relatives. This worked out well. The tomatoes were quite good and lunch was served late. At least we had these to tide us over for a bit!

I forgot to mention that on Thursday I watered the front yard tomato plants. Also, Black SeaMan was pulled.

In the evening we saw a scrub jay prancing around the back yard. Eventually this bird reached SunGold. The bird was attempting to peck at a mature tomato but got confused by the netting. The bird eventually gave up. Yes!

Janet's Jacinthe Jewel is not looking healthy. It's somewhat droopy and has a significant amount of yellow leaves.

I'm starting a new job tomorrow. I'm really, really looking forward to this. 

Harvested Sunchocola!

Sunday's harvest: 2 Stupice.

Monday's harvest: Stupice.

Tuesday's harvest: 2 Stupice and Sunchocola for a total of 3 tomatoes. I got a little bit of tomato training in the evening.

Black SeaMan is dead. We won't be getting anything from this plant. The transplanted Volunteer(4) is looking better and Purple Bumble Bee looks just fine. We'll see if they can produce some fruit after the late (trans)planting...

Today's harvest: Stupice and Sunchocola for a total of 2 tomatoes.

I woke up early to catch up on tomato training all the plants. Also, I fertilized and watered the front yard tomato plants.

During my rounds I noticed that Green Zebra had a growing tomato. That plant is in one of the pots near the south fence that doesn't get a lot of sun...

I had some Stupice and Sunchocola tomatoes today, they were tasty. Good stuff! 

We're Harvesting!

Tuesday's harvest includes 3 Stupice.

We're harvesting! We tried a couple of the Stupice and they taste like you'd expect -- a fresh tomato with a "classic" tomato taste. Nothing spectacular, nothing unusual, just a tomato you can slice in half and toss it into a salad. We're off to the races!

I added fertilizer to Black SeaMan. My wife watered it in and trimmed the burned leaves (the dogs pee on this plant for some reason). The plant does not look good but we hope for a turnaround.

Wednesday's harvest includes 2 Stupice.

My wife replaced the destroyed Blush with Momotaro.

Today's harvest includes 3 Stupice.

I cut a lot of the low branches for all the tomatoes again and did a lot of training. During my cutting and training I noticed several plants with tomatoes. These include German Orange Strawberry, Black Krim, Snow White, Pierce's Pride and Nyagous.

Every plant in the "koi pond" now has a growing tomato except Berkeley Tie Dye.

I added a stake to support Volunteer(2). 

Catching Up On Some Back Yard Plantings(2)

Here's the second half of this week's plantings...

Yesterday I dug the holes and my wife planted Neves Azorean Red, Snow White, Matt's Wild Cherry, Pierce's Pride, Black Krim and SunGold. I pulled out about a gallon and 3/4 of rocks and asphalt.

Today's plantings include Black Sea Man, Indigo Rose, Jaune Flamme, Black From Tula and Brad's Black Heart. A lot of dark tomatoes were planted today! I pulled out over 2 gallons of rock and asphalt.

My wife also started pulling out the grass in the area that I said we didn't have enough time to pull it all out. If we want to plant all our tomatoes, we'll need this area. We'll see how it goes...after all, this area didn't get the compost like the rest of the backyard planting area did. Still, it's better than nothing. 

Harvested A Mini Japanese Black Trifele

Today's harvest includes 17 Black Cherry, 10 Sweet 100, 6 Husky Cherry Red, 6 Blue Beauty, 4 Garden Peach, 3 Vorlon, 3 Berkeley Tie Dye, 3 Juliet, 3 Jaune Flamme, 3 Black Krim (8.5 ounces, 10 ounces), 2 Speckled Roman(1), 2 Supersweet 100, 2 German Orange Strawberry (7 ounces), 2 Piement, 2 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red(1), 2 Yellow Perfection, 2 Shah/Mikado, 2 Pineapple, Japanese Black Trifele (new), Porkchop, Black Seaman, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Speckled Roman(2) and Snow White for a total of 80 tomatoes.

The Michael Pollan plant is basically dead. I don't want any more tomatoes off of this plant. This is somewhat amazing because three weeks ago I could argue that it's the strongest plant I had. Maybe a cutworm got it, maybe it couldn't handle the heat...but I won't harvest from this plant again. There are a few unripened ones sitting on our sill that I may count toward the final total...but the plant is dead. Pierce's Pride, Nyagous, Green Zebra, Black Seaman are functionally dead as well. Green Zebra has been dead for two weeks but we've had no time to pull it.

Piement has an amazing texture! The tomato is unique. It looks like a pepper. Take a chili from the Chile's Restaurant logo and straighten it out -- that's the look of Piement. And it tastes good, too. I don't think I've ever had a tomato with such a pleasant texture. Blue Beauty was good, Shah/Mikado was good but Piement was really good.

While Japanese Black Trifele is a new tomato, it is very small. This falls in line with some of our other plants like Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red(1), Black Seaman, Berkeley Tie Dye, Pineapple, Pierce's Pride and maybe others.

I think this will be a bad year by comparison to other years. There are lots of "too small" tomatoes, weak/dying tomato plants and more blossom end rot than most years. I think the tomato seedlings were not as strong as prior years. 

Three More Tomatoes Maturing!

Today's harvest includes 6 Yellow Perfection, 4 Black Cherry, 3 Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, 2 Husky Cherry Red, Hungarian Heart (12 ounces), Black Seaman, Brad's Black Heart, Michael Pollan and Nyagous for a total of 20 tomatoes.

The Michael Pollan was prematurely picked about three or four days ago. It was left to ripen on the kitchen window sill.

The reason Brad's Black Heart tomatoes are maturing is because the plant is dying. This may be a similar story for Nyagous.

The Hungarian Heart tomato looks very nice. And I can tell the Yellow Perfection plant will be a machine, just cranking out tomatoes left and right.

Plants with maturing tomatoes include Speckled Roman, Jaune Flamme and Black Krim. We could be harvesting a good sized Black Krim tomorrow. 

Harvested Eight New Tomatoes!

Wednesday's harvest includes 7 Black Cherry, 3 Husky Cherry Red, 2 Stupice, SuperSweet 100 (new) and Yellow Perfection for a total of 14 tomatoes.

Thursday's harvest includes 7 Yellow Perfection, 4 Black Cherry, 3 Husky Cherry Red, 2 Shah/Mikado (new) and Porkchop for a total of 17 tomatoes.

Shah/Mikado tomatoes are a milky yellow color and looks interesting.

Friday's harvest includes 4 Yellow Perfection, 2 Michael Pollan (new), 2 Husky Cherry Red, Vorlon (14 ounces), Stupice, Black Cherry, Shah/Mikado and Black and Brown Boar for a total of 13 tomatoes.

The two Michael Pollan tomatoes were the largest Michael Pollan tomatoes I've ever seen. I put them on the scale and they both weighed two ounces. But for those unfamiliar with Michael Pollan tomatoes, that's huge! The Vorlon tomato is a beauty.

Saturday's harvest includes 11 Yellow Perfection, 4 Snow White (new), 2 Nyagous (new), 2 Husky Cherry Red, Black Seaman (new), Brad's Black Heart (new), Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red, Stupice, Pierce's Pride and Black Cherry for a total of 25 tomatoes.

The harvested Brad's Black Heart was tiny and the plant still doesn't look good while the Black Seaman tomato looked okay.

I spent a lot of time catching up on tomato training and cleaning out the underbrush of a lot of the tomato plants -- probably about two and half hours or so. I deep watered about half the tomato plants in the ground in the back yard. While watering I was clearing out the underbrush and found harvestable tomatoes for Nyagous and Snow White! Hey, look what I found! It was a lot of work but the tomato plants look a lot better.

Later on we drove down to San Juan Capistrano to visit my in-laws and other relatives. We brought down all these tomatoes and more. Most of the relatives came away with tomatoes. We gave them all away. We had a great time!

Today's harvest includes 6 Husky Cherry Red, 6 Yellow Perfection, Berkeley Tie Dye (new), Stupice, Vorlon (9 ounces), Black Cherry and Nyagous for a total of 17 tomatoes.

I deep watered the rest of the back yard tomatoes in the ground and five tomato containers. I spent some more time clearing out tomato underbrush while watering.

The Berkeley Tie Dye is tiny, only one or two ounces.

There will be a good sized Hungarian Heart harvested tomorrow. The maturing tomatoes include Missouri Pink Love Apple though I'm sure there are others.

Green Zebra is for all intents and purposes dead. It's just a matter of time before we pull it out. 

All Front Yard Seedlings Have Growing Tomatoes

I did some light tomato training early this morning. While training I noticed that Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Black Seaman and the potentially problematic Paul Robeson had growing tomatoes.

Now every front yard seedling has growing tomatoes.

In the back yard I noticed that SuperSweet 100 had growing tomatoes.

My wife has been deep watering the back yard tomato plants as her time permits. 

Preparing The On-Line Tomato Spreadsheet

My wife watered some of the back yard tomatoes yesterday during another hot day -- it got up to 94.7 degrees at Pierce College nearby.

I've been training the tomatoes the past two mornings as well as putting together the on line tomato harvest spreadsheet for 2013. I think I have it ready to go. If you're interested in seeing the numbers, post your email as a comment to this post and I'll be sure to include you.

While putting things together, here's what I've noticed:

It appears we did not plant SunGold this year. Both my wife and I are really surprised by this, but there's no record of it this blog for this year nor in my documentation. We both think we had a SunGold plant but perhaps we gave it away at some point. Or the unknown plant that we're guessing is Orange Paruche is really SunGold. Or more likely, we don't have it. No volunteers have come up yet. My wife may go out and grab one if we can still find it.

We planted a tomato plant named Grande in the back yard that was not recorded in my blog. This was the second of two French tomatoes handed to us by a TomatoMania volunteer. For the spreadsheet I guessed at the planting date based on what was planted around it.

All the plants in the "corner office" have growing tomatoes.

All but three plants in the "koi pond" have tomatoes. The three that do not are Paul Robeson, Black Seaman and Dr. Wyche's Yellow. Only Paul Robeson is concerning me. The concern is that I have had poor luck with this tomato plant the last several years. I'm beginning to think the line is "polluted" somehow but I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. The plant seems fine for now, just no tomatoes.

Four out of six plants in the south garden (in the back yard) have tomatoes. All six of these plants are grafts. As a group they look stronger and are a bit larger in size than the other plants. The ones missing tomatoes are Jersey Giant and Gold Medal. No concerns here, they look great.

In the main back yard area only Snow White and Green Zebra have tomatoes. This area was planted later than the rest, so no issues here.

Among the container plants Sweet 100 has growing tomatoes.

My guess is that we'll do about 5000 harvested tomatoes for 2013. Unofficially we planted 53 tomato plants this year, down significantly from last year. I'm also troubled by the early hot spells we've been having so far. 

Finished Planting the Front Yard

Yesterday afternoon my wife planted Paul Robeson, Black Seaman, Berkeley Tie Dye, Brad's Black Heart, Dr. Wyche's Yellow and Speckled Roman in the front yard "koi pond". I assisted with the last couple of holes but my wife did a vast majority of the work.

In theory our front yard is now finished, though we may add one more in a shaded area of the "corner office".

Tonight I started my first hole in the back yard. I pulled out enough rocks and stuff (there was at least one shard of glass) to fill a one gallon container. But there was a huge rock to the east of the hole that I simply could not get out of the hole. I'll try again in the morning before I head out to work. I hope the soil around the rock dries out and I can dislodge it. If I can't get it out my wife will plant something just to the west of this rock. 

Harvested Over 1000 Matt's Wild Cherry, 500 Snow White Tomatoes!

We've now harvested over 1000 Matt's Wild Cherry tomatoes (1039)! It's pretty easy because the plant is sprawling everywhere and the tomatoes aren't big at all. There's plenty more tomatoes to come but the plant will slow down soon.

We've now harvested over 500 Snow White tomatoes (515)! Snow White is strong enough to have a second wind after this initial harvest flush dies off. We could do 1000 tomatoes on this plant.

There are a couple of good sized tomatoes in this batch -- Persimmon comes to mind. However, the overall harvest weight is clearly dropping.

A Sweet 100 is maturing but this maturing tomato doesn't look like Sweet 100. It looks like another SunGold or SunSugar. I'll keep an eye out for this.

The Black Zebra matured but came up red with striping. So I'm taking an educated guess that it's Red Zebra. The on line tomato spreadsheet will be adjusted to the new name.

The Aunt Ruby's German Green harvested didn't look mature in the shoulders but the tomato definitely felt ready. We'll see when we taste it.

I spent a little extra time during the harvest to tie up some wayward branches and add several stakes to prop up drooping plants.

I've added fertilizer to the container plants in the back yard. 

Harvested Hungarian Heart!

When you miss a day of harvest you would think that the next day would be near double the total amount. In practice, that's not the case. When you harvest on a daily basis, the water brought up by the roots is then placed to the other maturing tomatoes. If you miss a day, the already mature tomatoes get some of that water and the near mature tomatoes don't mature as rapidly.

The harvested Hungarian Heart has a bit of a deformity and that's why it matured quicker. There are some good large tomatoes growing on this plant coming soon.
My wife pulled five plants last night -- Aunt Ruby's German Green(2), Black And Brown Boar, Jaune Coeur de Pigeon and the two volunteers.

My wife made tomato jelly on Friday and it is delicious!! You can put it on anything where jelly would go and it would be a terrific addition. Again, it's truly delicious!

The Volunteer(1) will be pulled soon. There's "rust" over all of the plant and all of the tomatoes. The tomatoes look visually unappealing.

Harvested Yellow Brandywine!

Well, so much for Matt's Wild Cherry topping out. Today's harvest total was bigger than yesterday's, though by total poundage yesterday's was clearly greater than today.

Today was the first RockfordFest down at Paradise Cove. I spent all day looking at old Firebirds and hanging at Paradise Cove. Several behind the scenes people came and spoke highly of James Garner and the show's atmosphere. My wife and I brought tomatoes from yesterday's and today's harvest which were liked by all.

And that's why today's post is late. I'm sunburned!

The Tide Is Coming In!

The tide is coming in! Today's total is nearly 100 more tomatoes than last Thursday's harvest, nearly double Friday's harvest. Remarkable!

Again, we have some beautiful, large tomatoes in today's batch. Crimson Cushion and Portuguese Neighbor lead the way.

I'm surprised at how productive Husky Cherry Red(2) has been!

Over the past couple of days we have been cleaning out our second freezer. It was defrosted and cleaned out over the weekend, then placed in a more convenient location within our garage. And just in time! Also we've been doing many small and not so small upgrades to our house.

We've been giving away a fair amount of our tomatoes but now there are simply too many to give away. My wife is roasting some of today's harvest as I type this.

We now know which color the Brandywine plant will be. It will be a Yellow Brandywine. Also, a large Persimmon has started to mature.

Harvested Five New Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 8 SunSugar, 7 Stupice, 7 Black and Brown Boar, 6 Quedlinburger Fruehe Liebe, 6 Husky Cherry Red(1), 4 Bloody Butcher, 4 Paul Robeson(1), 4 Lime Green Salad, 4 SunGold(1), 4 Matt's Wild Cherry, 3 Black Krim(2), 3 Jaune Coeur de Pigeon, 3 Husky Cherry Red(2), 2 Southern Night (6 ounces) (new), 2 Creme Brulee, 2 Honkin' Big Black Cherry, 2 Jaune Flamme, 2 Black Seaman(2), 2 Green Grape, Paul Robeson(2) (11.5 ounces) (new), Large Pink Anna(1) (new), Green Zebra(2) (new), Garden Peach (new), Kellogg's Breakfast (7.5 ounces) (new), Indian Stripe and Large Pink Anna(2) for a total of 83 tomatoes.

The tomato plants have been watered over yesterday and today. All the container plants got fertilizer and then it was watered in.

Five new tomatoes were harvested today! Paul Robeson(2) looked beautiful. Kellogg's Breakfast looks good but may have been harvested a day too early. That's not much of a problem at all. Southern Night looks interesting. The most unusual is Green Zebra(2). As I've mentioned earlier, it's red so it's not Green Zebra(2). The tomato had what looked like a wormhole (it's obviously a hole but I doubt it's a wormhole) so the tomato will be unusable. Until I can determine what the real tomato is, I'll keep the Green Zebra(2) moniker.

This heat wave (three days over 100 degrees) are pushing the tomatoes toward maturity. The tide is coming in!

Harvested Four New Tomatoes!

Today's harvest includes 8 SunSugar, 7 Matt's Wild Cherry, 5 SunGold(1), 3 Black Cherry, 2 Green Doctor's Kiwi(2) (new), 2 Husky Cherry Red(1), 2 Husky Cherry Red(2), 2 Quedlinburger Fruehe Liebe, 2 Black and Brown Boar, 2 Black Krim(2), 2 Stupice, 2 Green Grape, 2 Indian Stripe, Green Zebra(1) (new), Black Seaman(2) (new), Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red (6 ounces) (new), Vorlon (7 ounces), Honkin' Big Black Cherry, Japanese Black Trifele, Pierce's Pride and Volunteer(1) for a total of 49 tomatoes.

I forgot to mention that Green Doctor's Kiwi(2) was maturing. But Green Zebra(1) was a surprise. I noticed it last night and harvested this morning.

My wife and I tried Black and Brown Boar last night. It wasn't as full of flavor as we're used to from a Wild Boar Farms tomato. My wife described it as a bit soapy and I have to agree. We'll try other ones just to be sure -- perhaps this particular tomato was a little overripe. It is (was) a beautiful looking tomato.

The maturing tomatoes on Oaxacan Jewel(1) may never be harvested. The plant looks bad from leaf curl. The few maturing tomatoes are ripe in the shoulders with a green underside -- the opposite of how a tomato usually ripens. Also they're quite tiny.

I harvested a Patio today. But the tomato was malformed with too big a hole in it. I threw it out.

I believe a Green Zebra(2) is maturing.

Harvested First Tomato of 2011! Two More Plants With Tomatoes

Yesterday's harvest: SunGold.

On Wednesday I noticed that Michael Pollan had two growing tomatoes. My wife completed watering the back yard tomatoes.

Last night I noticed Black Seaman(1) had a growing tomato. Also, the corner office tomato plants were watered.

The training of the tomato plants to grow tall has been going on both in the morning and in the evening. Some branches are growing an inch or more a day and there's always branches to tuck or redistribute somewhere else.

The big news is that we harvested our first tomato last night! I was surprised to see a ripe SunGold tomato. I harvested it, my wife cut it in half and we shared it. Good taste but the skin was a bit heavy.

More Plants With Tomatoes!

Last night I noticed that SunSugar had a small tomato.

Tonight I got a chance to do some more tomato training. Lots of plants with new tomatoes! They include Orange and Green Zebra, Southern Night, GardenPeach, Black Seaman, Cassidy's Folly and Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Red in the back yard. In the front yard Japanese Black Trifele and Green Zebra have tomatoes.

Apparently the gardeners got rid of the volunteer in the gutter last weekend. But...we may have a new volunteer in the raised bed.
